My Writing Reflection

When I first signed up for English Comp. I did not realize the high standards my writing would be put up against. The different types of essays we were taught to write really helped me grow as a writer I believe. With the ad analysis, comparative essay, narrative essay, and the argumentative essay I learned many new and different skills. The first essay we wrote was the ad analysis. For this essay we did five paragraphs analyzing an ad we had to find ourselves. After scanning through multiple magazines and seeing possible contenders, I found the perfect ad for me, Revlon’s Ultra HD Lipstick in Seventeen Magazine. This ad to me gave a clear message it wanted out for its target audience, which I saw as a strength to write this essay. Though once I received my grade for the essay I saw that my biggest writing weakness brought my essay …show more content…
In this essay we did six body paragraphs having an introduction, three body paragraphs on our main argumentative points, a counter-claim paragraph and a conclusion. To decide our topics the class was given a list of debatable topics that you could either be for or against. I decided to do mine about the need for harsher laws against texting and driving. My strength with writing this essay was the fact that I am really good at seeing both sides to situations so I did not let myself get very biased, but at the same time I get very passionate about the side I am on. Unfortunately, my greatest weakness grammar got me again; even though I finally remembered to not put any contractions I forgot to be as attentive with the placements of commas. Hopefully with this essay the comma lesson will stick. One thing I know I learned that will stick with me is to remember to always put page numbers after all my quotes from books or articles. This essay helped me grow as a writer by letting me get a real taste doing a research-based paper which I know will benefit me greatly when I get into

Overall the essays that we have read this semester have been good. There are a few essays in particular that I think benefited me the most was “The Time to Act I Now” written by Al Gore, “Just Walk on By” written by Brent Staples, and the “Letter from Birmingham Jail” written by Martin Luther King. These essays have benefited me in a numerous amount of ways in which I am going to explain how their writing styles helped me become a better writer. Staples helped me a lot in which he taught me to explain my reasoning fully so that the audience know exactly what I am talking about. Another thing that Staples taught me was to explain the setting of the story in full detail so the readers can visualize what’s actually happening in the story this…

Having to apply what I learned from each essay has really helped me a lot. By learning to use MLA style to have a better look throughout my essays, and fixing unnecessary semicolon and using commas when needed to avoid run on sentences or fragments, as well as eliminating to-be verbs for shorter more detailed sentence, and how to use work or words that aren't mine correctly to avoid plagiarism. From learning all those things, it has totally changed my way of writing because the way I used to go about my written, is not even close to how ENGL 101 changed me to being a better writer than I was before.…

Throughout the first semester of College Composition, I wrestled with three essays, all differing in format and content. The first was a narrative that reflected our educational experience. After this came an analysis of a visual text, followed by a research paper. The narrative was the easiest to write; however, I acquired important skills for writing the other two, which were in a less familiar format. With the three essays, I learned about my own writing skills and habits concerning development and critical thinking, time management, and organization.…

I used to think the only good way to write a sentence was to make sure it was long and full of detail, but through peer review, I learned the beauty of a simple sentence. I realized that you don’t need to write a long complex sentence to make a statement; and that a short, simple sentence can provide even more of an impact on the reader than a long sentence. I also discovered that my strength in writing essays is to ensure that I choose a subject I am passionate about the topic. All of my best writing stems from topics that matter a lot to me and are important for me to talk about. I’ve found out that the most difficult part for me is thoroughly explaining my thought.…

THEORY OF WRITING: ITERATION III In my first theory of writing iteration, I stated that writing was communication with words. For writing to be effective, it had to fulfil a purpose and conveyed a message successfully. Although I still believe this to be true, I also declared that effective writing involved correct usage of grammar, spelling, punctuation, organization, etc. No longer agreeing with this statement, it was the initial concept that challenged the way I view effective writing that changed in a manner of months.…
