My Writing Quality

When it comes to writing for either a class or for my own enjoyment, I never thought of what I actually was good at doing as a writer. I just wrote what came to mind. Now that I’ve given it a thought, I’ve realized that I am consistent in being able to write in complete sentences. They may not always flow or fit together as well as they should but they are complete sentences. Writing is unquestionably hard for me. It just seems easier to just push writing away, maybe because I feel I don’t have the confidence on what it takes to be a “good writer”.

But who is a good writer or what does it mean to me to be a good writer? Complete sentences, punctuation, capitalization, grammar, transition, emotions, writing format, being interested in a topic, grabbing the reader’s attention, a theme, these are all what I consider to be what good writing is or what a good writer does. I hope that as I take this class that my role and expectations involve learning how to use all of those aspects in my writing for in the future.

Whether it be writing college and job applications, writing in a college class, writing a business letter, writing write-ups or record books for 4H or FFA, I will use writing. I’m going to be honest here, the only reason I took Foundations of Writing was because it was the prerequisite for Composition 1. Coming into this class, at first, was defiantly overwhelming. It was almost as if my worst nightmare was coming true. I never enjoyed writing even if I had the choice on what I could write. Writing is and always has been my struggle. I was for sure that I was going to end up going to Mrs.Hartmans room to drop this

Writing has always been one of the most difficult skills that I have been learning through my college career, but it has also been the most important skill because unlike other skills writing affects my works across all courses or subjects. Writing has also helped me to get in to UMD, receive scholarships, and be accepted in research programs. Therefore, all the effort that I have made to improve my writing skill is worth it. From experience, writing is not like other skills that one can learn overnight, for me, writing skill is very slow progress and requires a lot of writing and reading; this is what I got from this class. There are good writers and there are good writers who work hard to become better. Mrs. Fiske, my English teacher junior and senior year of high school always told me that I was one of the best writers in my class but I could always be better. Spelling has always been one of my strong suits and I always get bothered when people can’t spell simple words. I’m pretty good at writing essays but I do not enjoy writing them at all.…

Whether we know it or not in this modern society we are writers everyday of our lives. These interactions shape not only how we communicate but how we write as well. Personally, I have been shaped by the influence of both other writers I have known and those I have only read the creations of. Those same influences contributed to both my writing style in the classroom and to my identity as a writer. I spent a lot of my childhood with my nose deep in fiction novels at near by libraries.…

Everyone is faced with struggles in life, whether it be physical, emotional, or spiritual. Throughout my life I’ve been in a constant struggle with reading and writing. I am not the one who can claim to be able to remember every single moment of my premature years. I do know this, however, it was one of the toughest times of my short lifespan. Out of all the problems from being overweight, nervous most days, and being sick a great deal of the time along with having very few friends, learning to read as my memory chronicles it was the biggest if not the hardest problem a child such as myself could face.…

In the morning, I’d wake up and it’d be a struggle to even get to school because of my issues with sensory and how clothes fit and felt. When I got to school, I was often ridiculed by teachers. Even though I showed talent in understanding topics, it was often harder to understand my handwriting. They would take me out of class to try and work with it, they’d give me hundreds of lettering packets up through fourth grade. All it did was distract me, make me feel insecure about my own writing, and take time out of my class work.…

Confidence is key to effortless writing. Yet, the biggest obstacle I have to writing well is lack of confidence. It doesn’t matter how much experience you have or how talented you are, you won’t go so far unless you are confident of what you have to offer. I tend to think everything I write sucks, but if I keep a positive mind, it makes me keep trying to improve. And I would rather think I suck at writing, then be completely convinced that I rule the writing world.…

The writing process is an art to place the ideas out on paper, but not in a messy way. Maybe the writing can be a messy process because we will need to find the writing process that will work for us, but at the end, we will have to use the right word combinations, so we can transmit the clear message to the reader. The seven steps of the writing process are: discovering, planning, composing, getting feedback, revising, editing, and proofreading. Sometimes is impossible to follow all the steps in sequence, but what really matters is that we continue working on the writing process until we can get our ideas down in a paper.…

Ever since I was a little girl, I can recall my parents telling me that I am good with my words. I always considered this a compliment whether it was because of an argument we had, an act of persuasion, them reading a school paper of mine, or even a birthday card. As I sit here and reflect on my experience with writing in my life, I find that I have only truly enjoyed putting my words on paper when they described something that I am passionate for, or heavily interested in. In general, I have thought of writing essays for school as being a largely intimidating task, not because I have trouble with my ideas but because I have trouble organizing my thoughts to flow well. To be honest, when I found out that I would not be able to exempt English…

Effective writing doesn’t happen by chance. It requires careful planning and preparation, thoughtful research and analysis, an iterative approach to review and revision, and the willingness to accept constructive criticism and incorporate feedback into your final draft. When I used a systematic methodology to write my narrative essay and persuasive essay, I learned that following well-defined writing processes makes writing easier, aids understanding, and improves the readability and effectiveness of my compositions.
