Reflection: My Writing Journey As A Writer

To say my writing journey at the beginning of this class was difficult, would be an understatement. My writing life in this class was very rocky at first, but, with help from many different things from past classes and things from new ones, I was able to grow into the writer I am today. When it came to trying to learn by a new teacher, I struggled with the new ways she did things compared to my 112 professor. Having the workshops on Thursdays, where we had to review two people’s essays and write up a response to each one, was majorly different; but after the second time of completing them, I felt like they helped me grow as a writer, and as a peer. I was worried when the professor told us to do this exercise in class that it wouldn’t help me, but it did. I felt like all my hard work and heartache from the past three projects was finally paying off and I was finally getting somewhere.
The things I continually struggle with is trying to write a good thesis. I’ve had the problem pretty much through my entire writing career, starting in elementary school. It really showed with projects one and two. If I hadn’t previously struggled with learning how to write a good one, I probably wouldn’t have been so stressed trying to figure out what the professor was asking of me. I hope in the future to better myself on a thesis and better understand the different kinds depending on what paper I’m writing.
I will continue to improve, and not shrink back to where I was at the beginning of the semester, by just writing. I will plan ahead, think about my days, know where the good days are for essay writing, and those that aren’t good for essay writing. I will write more outlines, I won’t be afraid to ask questions or do revisions, those are there to help me succeed. I need to humble myself, come in thinking that I’m at a level with everyone else in this class, and not to except an amazing grade on every paper. I need to leave room to grow, and I feel like I didn’t give myself that chance at the beginning of the

My mind feels like a 1000 piece puzzle missing a piece. I can’t simply find the right words to say to start this paper. It is always like this when freewriting; the idea of freewriting in and of itself frightens me. Never able to put the words in my head onto paper in a way that it can be read eloquently by others. My hands start to cramp automatically at the idea of freewriting.…

I hope I learn to write a great essay before the end of this writing course. I had been out of school for nearly forty two years and I believed I knew everything that I needed to know about writing. The first in class writing assignment showed me that I knew diddly-squat about writing, I never knew that there were so many different types of essay. The first essay I wrote was a bomb and opened my eyes to what is needed to write a really good essay. It helped when the teacher would group us into four or five and we would use the time for brainstorming or group discussion on different topic.…

College Prep Writing Advanced is the hardest class I have ever taken. I learned a lot over the course of this class, and I believe that my approach to writing has changed. I have learned that while writing it is easy to underthink, but it is easier to overthink. I also learned you cannot wait until the last minute to revise and edit essays. The first paper we wrote was the personal essay.…

Knowing I had to aim for a different audience this time around really affected my writing. When my tone for the original paper was rather informal and even somewhat fun, now I had to write for the APA, a group of people who take this line of work very seriously (as they should). Due to this, I gave my arguments a more serious tone, and I even expanded my vocabulary a bit to give a good impression. If I want the APA to listen to me, I should write in a tone they would use. I was careful about the sources I used for this.…

Project 2 Toni Morrison, bell hooks, and James Baldwin are all writers, professionals crafting fully realized people living in black and white, and poetically weave humor and personal tragedy into their essays about injustice. In the past, I always avoided calling myself a writer because I simply could not compare with them or their contemporaries. Throughout the years, I realized that forbidding myself from using that title was not a humble act, but instead, limiting myself from strengthening my writing through making excuses. Writing did not come naturally to me. I could do the bare minimum.…

It has really taught me more about the understanding of the writing process and structure, in which helped me to not focus so much on the actual writing parts.…

This English class has been very helpful in my efforts to improve my writing abilities, but has also been very challenging due to there being a different median for every essay. It’s been a heavy work load especially this semester since I decided to enroll in five classes, but in the end it has been very beneficial indeed. I can’t say that writing essays has been one of my strong points but I believe that this course has helped me improve tremendously and it has also made me feel a lot more comfortable with my writing. While in high school I would usually write all of my essays a day before the due date a habit of mine that was very difficult to overcome, but now I have learned from my mistakes.…

Over the course of this semester I learned a handful of things about myself as a writer, that will help me develop as a more proficient writer over the course of my four years here. As a writer one of my strengths is backing up my argument with solid and concrete evidence that truly makes the reader believe what they are reading. Another area of my writing that I excel in is being able to process great ideas that follow the guidelines and the prompt. With that being said I have also seen that while the ideas may come with ease, I do have a challenging time with getting the ideas from my head onto paper in a manner that isn’t so disorganized that it makes the reader second guess themselves. Another shaky part of my writing comes much before the actual forming of sentences.…
