My Writing Journal Analysis

Writing Journal (Morning Pages)

I chose morning pages as one of my three pieces for Seasaw because it was something that I had to do at least three times a week for several weeks and it made me appreciate how important writing is. I haven’t written in a journal in such a long time since everything I need to write down is through my computer, phone, or if I write something on the board in class. This is a great strategy to bring into the classroom because it allows students to write about anything they want, with no rules! This helped me teach writing in my 3rd grade class because I had students starting to write in the morning versus the afternoon (mainly because I had to do it) and they were able to write about anything that they wanted. Students seemed to like this idea because they didn’t have to write on a particular topic, like they were used to, but others had no clue what to write about so I had to write suggestions on the board that students could use as a guide.

When I showed this in class (TED 404), a lot of you were surprised that I taught this term in kindergarten, which made me think that this is also great for upper grades to have them learn what a new term means. I can definitely use this strategy in any grade that I end up teaching because it is a great way to introduce the vocabulary term with its definition, include example sentences, and pictures. This taught me how to teach reading and writing in class because students had to read the word “Oviparous” and know what the term meant and then they had to write a sentence about an oviparous animals, which they were all able to

Life is short. That is the simple and unforgiving fact that cannot be avoided. It can often pass by as quickly as it comes when noses are buried in our cell phones instead of observing and appreciating the changing of seasons or the orange-purple sunset that concludes each day. That one idea— to pay attention— is what drives Alice Steinbach 's philosophy on writing along with a collection of other tactics taught to her by her ninth grade creative writing teacher Miss Dennis, which is showcased in her essay "The Miss Dennis School of Writing". Steinbach creates a well-rounded philosophy consisting of many elements throughout the essay.…

I chose to record a 25-minute whole group, English Language Arts lesson that focused on the 7-Steps Vocabulary strategy and Sentence Frames. This lesson focused on two selected terms (play and dip) from the targeted story “Pig in a Wig.” As I began the lesson, I activated students’ prior knowledge by asking students if they remembered the two words that they learned the previous week. Students were able to recall the terms and their definition and were able to remember the way those words were introduced to them. I began explaining to students that they would be introduced to two new words from a new story we would begin reading the following day.…

Upon reading chapter 5 from Holdstein’s “Who says? The Writer’s Research” I found myself faced with a number of ideas I had been unfamiliar with. After thoroughly examining this chapter, I realized that previously, I hadn’t properly evaluated resources, which is a mistake I made as someone who gathers research and analyzes various ideas in my writing. Throughout this chapter, I took notice that I, as a writer, have three main responsibilities: conducting a thorough search for sources using the proper key words, carefully and meticulously, yet efficiently analyzing sources, and determining the rationality of a source. While these ideas may present themselves as challenging, as I had been previously unfamiliar with them, if I acquire the proper…

After that we discussed barriers that he has overcome in his life to become an improved writer. Next, Tais told me about the things that have best influenced his literacy skills to this day.…

The daybook entries that we wrote throughout the semester were refreshing and thought provoking activities. They forced me to think about my thought process and how I function as a person. The activities also made me reflect on my goals as a person, and how UWRT 1103 was benefiting my progression toward them. Some of the entries were very random questions that had nothing to do with the current class topic, these were by far my favorite writings. My two favorite daybook questions were, what do you wonder about, and give your definition of success?…
