My Writing Expectations

Decent Essays
What expectations have been placed on your writing in the past?
I was fortunate enough to go through high school with a group of great group of English professors, people who really cared about their students and wanted them to succeed. My main influence in high school was my Advanced Writing professor Mr. Gehrman, a man who was known to be very eccentric, and also had high expectations for myself and the rest of my class. I would like to say that I met his expectations the majority of the time, but I’ve had instances where a couple of my papers were clearly lackluster, and he didn’t hesitate to tell me. I really did appreciate that type of honesty from a person who I considered a role model, and I believe that he was the driving force behind

Having to apply what I learned from each essay has really helped me a lot. By learning to use MLA style to have a better look throughout my essays, and fixing unnecessary semicolon and using commas when needed to avoid run on sentences or fragments, as well as eliminating to-be verbs for shorter more detailed sentence, and how to use work or words that aren't mine correctly to avoid plagiarism. From learning all those things, it has totally changed my way of writing because the way I used to go about my written, is not even close to how ENGL 101 changed me to being a better writer than I was before.…

Edwin Land once said, “An essential aspect of creativity is not being afraid to fail.” In the two different writing, both authors come from very different backgrounds, but have similar messages. Amy Tan talks about not being afraid to do what you love, even if people tell you that you should major in something else. Anne Lamott discusses how you should not be afraid to write your first draft of a paper, it is suppose to be horrible. In her essay, “Mother Tongue”, Amy Tan discusses the hardships with her and her mother’s types of English, while in “Crummy First Drafts”, Anne Lamott talks about getting over your fears when writing the first draft of a paper; both of the authors essays vary in structure and tone, but have similar styles and purposes…

Even now, as a college student, I do not find it to be enjoyable if I am inclined to write as a requirement for a class. Many times, I find the process of drafting 5 paragraphs with 3 body paragraphs compressed between an Intro and Conclusion to be tedious and burdensome, but over time I have learned to appreciate this process. Although slaving away to move my fingers across my keyboard to type several drafts takes time, it is helpful in the end to develop a well written paper. In the past, I would settle for an average of a C on all my essays because my writing style was plain and it lacked a sophisticated tone. This was due to my use of simple sentences and awkward word choices throughout my essays.…

Over the last four essays, my ability to write has improved exponentially from the beginning of the year. Through the four essays I have learned valuable skills that will be the support for future essays. On the two beginning essays my ability to use vocabulary and other valuable skills was improving. By being supplied by information from the instructor, and fellow classmates I was able to spot my weaknesses in my writing and improve where improvement was needed. As the semester progress each essay improved upon the last as self reflection and reflection from others was used wisely.…

My writing process is similar to the typical high schooler, except like the typical high schooler I have no idea what my process is. Having to slow down and think about your process before writing can be complicated due to the fact that I am thinking about what I doing naturally. Hopefully I will be able to fully break down my process and use what I learn from that to improve my writing. My process starts with me focusing on a prompt whether it’s given to me or I have to create one myself.…

Writing Sample In life, sometimes we are afraid to move forward for fear of failure. We hold ourselves back and instead of getting closer to our goals we stop ourselves. That can result in missing great opportunities, however, all we may need is a push to get rid of the fear so we may reach our full potential. Many children, who for the first time are learning how to ride a bike, start off with training wheels.…

The most crucial step of my writing processes is letting my mind go wild and my fingers move freely. Whenever I write anything, I always let myself write whatever is on my mind at that exact second. Even if it doesn’t make 100% sense or isn’t exactly on topic, I’ll type it out. When I was writing my essay, I didn’t stop to fix anything until the very end. When I finished writing, I looked for mistakes.…

Writing is an art; we create our thoughts in your mind and express it on paper. Once we start writing we keep getting new ideas and when we re-read what we wrote, sometimes it might surprise us. I like to write during early mornings or in the evening when it is quiet. My reading table is facing towards the window so when fresh air is in my room, fresh ideas generate inside me as well. I make sure to have some healthy snacks and a bottle of water in front me…

When entering college and finishing my first essay, I realized my process wasn’t good enough in order to write a good essay. When doing my first narrative and comparing my narrative to the article “Thirty-eight who saw murder,” my process was reading thoroughly over the article and writing a reading report of the reading which it was included in the beginning of my introduction as seen in the image below. Afterwards, I just started finishing my introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion. In addition, when finishing my first draft I revised it as well as from my instructor as shown in the black marks below. From the individual conference with my instructor, it is shown in the image that I needed to fix almost my whole introduction.…

My writing process coming into junior year was quite flawed and would go moderately like this: I would try and start with some hook that at least sounded like it related to the topic I was assigned. I then added a thesis that did not sound like total trash that included exactly what I planned to discuss. As I wrote the rest of my essays, I would sometimes realize there was something I felt added to the argument’s appeal, and after adding it to the body paragraphs, I summed it up in a couple words and squeezed it into my thesis. That was about the maximum amount of revising I would do for my essays. My decently crafted essays contained simple diction with a few SAT words I remembered while writing thrown in awkwardly.…

As a senior at TCPS, I am currently taking my second dual-enrollment college course, comp one. Before this college level writing course, I thought I had the skill of writing papers mastered. Throughout grade school, writing a paper in a few hours was easily achievable and was the general thing to do. My peers and I easily wrote papers without effort and made good grades. Therefore, when I started my first college writing course, I thought this was the thing to do.…

It just seems easier to just push writing away, maybe because I feel I don’t have the confidence on what it takes to be a “good writer”. But who is a good writer or what does it mean to me to be a good writer? Complete sentences, punctuation, capitalization, grammar, transition, emotions, writing format, being interested in a topic, grabbing the reader’s attention, a theme, these are all what I consider to be what good writing is or what a good writer does. I hope that as I take this class that my role and expectations involve learning how to use all of those aspects in my writing for in the future.…
