My Writing Errors

Improved Essays
In order to become a stronger writer one must recognize his errors. In my previous essays I have not done a good job of expressing my subtopics. I have made the mistake of hiding my subtopics, making them unclear. In order to fix this problem I could create a web or some sort of visual that will allow me to organize my thoughts. Having a specific sentence in the beginning of each paragraph will also orientate the reader on what to look for in that specific paragraph. In the past I had the habit of bouncing around with my ideas, making my idea unclear. In order to strengthen my writing some other possibilities could be; to use different styles of writing to notify the reader when the subject has changed.

I like to create charts and outlines about the topic and then turn them into sentences that I will put in my essay. This method works for me because when I do the diagrams or chart I already put things in order from the start and all I have to do after is put it in a sentence. What I do is little similar to what Anne Lamott described in her article but she seems to have better results than my…

The Great Gatsby was an interesting read because of how the drama unfolds throughout the novel. It demonstrates the extravagant lifestyle that happened in the 20s along with the moral decay in the 20s. It was interesting to contrast that image with Gatsby, who tries to leave behind his old life by reinventing himself. Although he tries hard to be accepted into the elite class, Gatsby is bounded by the impenetrable boundary between the rich and the poor. I was uncomfortable watching The Wolf of Wall Street because of the raunchy scenes in the movie.…

The first assignment, a profile of a restaurant, demonstrates my how I have grown as a writer. This was the first essay I have written since my first quarter starting at UC Davis, so starting this essay, I already knew it would be a challenge to revamp my writing skills. This essay especially challenged me because it was a descriptive essay, and I have always struggled with being descriptive and creative. This was also the essay I chose to revise at the end of the quarter, which allows me to employ what I have learned into an old piece of writing. I titled this essay “A Bite of Relief” after visiting my father’s old restaurant at a chance of receiving closure about a situation that has always challenged my emotions.…

My essays are filled with multiple grammatical errors but my primary patterns of error are weak transitions and sentence fragments. I have weak transitions in my essays because I do not use a word or phrase that shows how the meaning of one sentence is related to the meaning of the preceding sentence. In order to fix my issue, I need to have transition markers that indicate contrast or using a word that connects the previous sentence to the next one. Using words such as ("for example, for instance") would help the direction of my argument be more apparent to the reader. My second major pattern of error is sentence fragments because I have incomplete sentences or ones that cannot stand alone in my papers.…

Going into college, I was very nervous about taking this class. Throughout high school, I excelled in math and science, but I always struggled in reading and writing. The most challenging part for me, then and now, is reaching the length limit for papers; my writing style is very condensed and it is incredibly difficult for me to expand my ideas to a specific length. While writing the first paper, I struggled with meeting the length requirement because I was writing about something I wasn’t passionate about. But to my surprise, the second and third paper were much easier to write, and much easier to reach the length requirement.…

Upon entering WRC the first day of classes, I had the utmost confidence. I believed my writing was near perfection, due to my pricy and challenging high school education. I still believe that I learned a lot from high school, but this class required a different type of writing that I had yet to experienced. WRC 1013 demanded academically researched papers, which I had done before, but in the past it had been strictly research. In these papers I had to convince my audience of something and why it is important which was incredibly frustrating and hard for me to do.…
