I was a 10-year-old girl quickly trying to finish up her homework, hoping to be able to finish in time to watch her favorite T.V. show. I did not want to read; certainly, I did not want to read even more because my father was forcing me to read. My father always had this idea that reading would one day make you smarter and knowledgeable. I was only 10-years-old, so I thought this was bogus. I thought it was my father’s excuse for not letting me watch my show; in fact, he did not approve of me watching the show because he thought it was too inappropriate and gory for my age group. …show more content…
When I got back the first couple of essays I had to write for my college writing class, I was disappointed. My professor’s comments on my essays weren’t exactly as what I was expecting. She brought up a lot of major issues on my essay that I needed to improve on. When she asked me to revise my essays, I remember looking at it and struggling on where/how to begin revising it. I didn’t know what to do. I knew that college writing standards were way much higher than writing standards back in high school. Because the standards were much higher, I had no idea how to reach that standard on my essays. It was quite obvious. The reason why I didn’t know how to write a satisfactory college essay was because I had stopped reading in high school. Once I stopped reading, I missed out on the opportunity of gaining knowledge and information as well as improving my comprehension and analytical skills that I could’ve gained throughout my high school academic years. At that moment, it was quite clear what the next smartest thing to do would be: get back to reading as a daily

I became an adult on Monday, June 15, 2015 during my AP Writing class, standing in the sweltering heat, completing 50% of my term 4 grade. It was a Moth presentation, based on the Moth radio hour. We all had to plan out a story to tell, something personal with a message that would resonate universally. I swallowed my fear and an illusion of pride, looked out at the teenagers I had spent years of classes with and, in short, told them the truth. For those five to seven minutes I let my façade slip…

In some cases, high school writing is a lot easier than college writing. Some may say that college writing is easier, but others my feel that in college the professors tend to assume or consider that every college student can write an essay. As for myself I have not been in school for the past 11 years, therefore it will be a little harder for me to understand and comprehend exactly what the assignment that I would have to write about. Going from high school to college is a big jump. College professors expect the level of performance to be higher than high school teachers. In high school, students did not get the freedom to come up with their own ways of expressing their ideas. They were given a set of rules to follow, and it may have helped them plan and write an essay, but those who continued to follow these rules limit themselves. College, on the other hand, allows students the freedom to express their thoughts. Although they can express their ideas freely, it’s better if the writing is to the point with enough information to support it. That’s why college-level writing means to be succinct, writing less but saying more is crucial in keeping the readers’ interested.…

Imagine, a college freshman is handed back their first paper, only to receive a nightmarish grade. They rack their brain for how this could happen; they had always earned exemplary grades in their high school English class, but they were unprepared for the college standards of writing. Regrettably, too many college freshmen are met with this exact dilemma. Their high school teachers do not show them how to write, but instead what to write, and leave their students completely unaware of what awaits them in college. Consequently, college freshman are vulnerable to repeating their bad habits and continuing the cycle of lower level writing.…
