English 1301 I was never a big fan of the English language or writing in general. One reason being is that it was always difficult for me to understand its numerous rules complexity. Up until now, I never fully understood and respected the subject. However, this class has finally helped me to understand many of its basic grammar rules, discover new writing techniques, and to appreciate how wonderful the world of writing truly is. Personally, I believe that the basic grammar rules are what really make writing so difficult. Remembering how semicolons work or when and where to place the simple commas are some of the things that I’ve always had trouble with. Before, all I ever knew was to brainstorm and create a bubble plan. However, I have recently discovered two helpful techniques. One of this is technique is writing my own thoughts down in a journal. This free thinking form of writing taught me to just simply write down whatever I was thinking and not to worry about technicalities. This has really helped me a lot because I’m the type who worries about the little details and it really slows me down; however, with this new technique, I am able to write down everything in my head without any worries. It also helped me organize my writing by eliminating the things that are not needed in my writing. Another technique I learned that kind of goes hand in hand with the other technique is downshifting. This was the most important thing I learned this semester, for not only is it important, but is essentially helpful in many ways. What I really like about downshifting is that not only is it limited in this class, but an individual like me can eventually use it for many things. I can use it in any subject or class. I have noticed that it is very helpful in my other college class, History 1301. In History 1301, we would read a chapter weekly and write a forum over the chapter. With downshifting, writing these forums has really helped me and I can also see it improve my skills later
