Essay About My Writing Journey

It has been a couple months since writing my last cover letter. It is time for me to reflect on my growth as a writer. Do I feel more like a writer than I had felt before? Yes and no. I definitely do not feel like I can call myself a writer. However, I do feel like my writing abilities have progressed. Through my English Composition journey, I felt like my eyes were opened to how much I struggle with writing. Despite the hardships that I have encountered when writing, I have also seen some improvement in the areas that English Composition covers. I have learned that there are six main objectives that must be fulfilled during the writing process in order to have a sufficient essay. One of the very first objectives of writing an exceptional essay is to write a complex thesis. When it comes to writing a complex thesis, I think that I have progressed since the midterm. I know what a complex thesis should look like, but …show more content…
After getting feedback on my papers, I started to realize all of the habits that I had. The first thing I learned was that I lacked sentence variety. It was difficult for me to variate my sentences. Secondly, I realized that I had not even attempted to add transitions to my essays. To variate my sentences, I just rearranged sentence structures. It was as if transition words did not exist. When looking at some of my essays in the past, there would not be a transition word in site. This is why revision after receiving feedback was so important. I could apply suggestions from someone who had not read my paper before. This is an advantage because revision really makes me all sorts of confused. Revision requires reading my own words over and over. It all starts to run together, and then it starts to sound like gibberish. It makes me feel unintelligent and low functioning. With more practice revision might be a smoother process, but for now, thank goodness for

After reading Mike Bunn’s “How to Read Like a Writer,” I revisited my directed self-placement essay while asking myself the many questions Bunn recommends to ask oneself when “reading like a writer.” In doing so, I was able to recognize the strengths and weaknesses I possess as a writer, and therefore know where I need to grow the most as a writer. One of my greatest strengths as a writer is knowing my audience and composing my writing accordingly. I am aware that when my audience is a teacher who will be reading and grading plenty of the same essays to include original ideas and arguments; it gets boring reading the same type of paper and ideas over and over. Along with my well thought out ideas and arguments, I also credit myself with the ability of using appropriate evidence from credible sources that support my claims.…

It is a very important part of my writing process to put a paper down for at least twenty-four hours, which hopefully include a decent amount of sleep, and come back to it with a fresh mind. I think this gives me a much better understanding of what needs to be developed and what is useless information. Depending on time constraints for the paper I will try to pick it back up the next day and go through the first reread, which will be my first attempt a the first step of my revising…

I started my journey through writing this year a bundle of nerves and a stomach full of coffee. This is my first year taking an advanced English course, but I was determined to do well. There has been no sleeping in class or slacking off this year, I’m lucky enough to take a college course a year early and at a better price, and I’m not going to waste it. I’ve learned a lot this semester, including but not limited to: identifying how exactly the author’s purpose and audience determines effective writing, developing pieces of writing though a process of planning, revising, and drafting, compose an organized essay with clear points and main ideas, used appropriate tone and formality, critiqued writing, and finally how to grasp the MLA format. My writing has improved through the concepts I have learned this semester.…

As you requested, I am writing to share my past writing experiences which include what kinds of writing I have done in school, the feedback that I seek on my work before I turn in assignments, the memories that I have of writing, voluntary writing I have done, and much more. Past Experiences with Writing Previous to this course I have taken several mandatory English, Writing, and Literature courses in which I have gained experience that now impact the way I write. In high school, I took my basic English & Writing courses, along with an Advanced Placement English IV course, in which the teacher persuaded me to join the University Interscholastic League (UIL) and compete in the Ready Writing Competition, in which I won first place in the…

Throughout the semester of English Composition I, I learned any new things. Over the past few months I have learned many new tips on how to create a good paper. Although I gained much knowledge over the past few months I did struggle with a few things such as formulating a written thesis statement expressing my main point in the composition, producing rough drafts preliminary to the final draft, applying transition strategies to organize the entire composition cohesively and coherently, and overall practicing various prewriting strategies, such as thinking, brainstorming, listing, and freewriting.…

I have also learned and demonstrated that I am capable of producing well written papers and essays In the past four years the areas of writing that I have been the most successful in are essays because I can quickly write on the topic, then compared to my ability to write with nothing to start off of. But over the past four years my ability has significantly increased, I have gone from starting sentences with the same word consistently, and making punctuation errors to making very few. I also had errors in my citations, explanations, and the amount of times that…

Professor Warnick, I enjoyed this class, and I do believe it helped me to improve my writing. I always have a hard time in English classes because writing is not something I am good at. However, I was able to keep up in this class, and I also learned many things that, I am sure, will be useful to me in the future. In general, I would say my writing process needs improvement.…

Over the course of this semester in my English 1320 class I have seen a drastic change throughout my writing style. Although I still have difficulties with a few writing tasks, I believe that I have improved significantly throughout this course. I have found that with my professor’s guidance along with my own personal editing that my grades have increased. Although it is difficult to not get caught up in simply striving for a letter grade or attaining a 4.0 grade point average, I would like to believe that my main goal was different. Of course I would love to achieve those goals as well, but overall my primary goal throughout this class was to become more relaxed and comfortable in my writings, to use new strategies and proper kinds of conventions, and to truly find a way to express my passion on these papers.…

Throughout this semester, My Writing has been improved in relation to understanding the genre conventions and identifying the rules for different writing processes. One of the topics I learned how to master throughout this semester is becoming better at in-text citations. Another topic that my writing has improved in is in media res. In media res might have been one of the hardest parts I had to try to learn and had to improve on. The third improvement in my writing process had to be on genre conventions such as thesis statements, rhetorical analysis, and organization.…

Going back over my fifth grade notebooks has not once failed to make me laugh and cringe at my boy troubles and lists of cute boys in my class. I love words. I love reading them, writing them and interpreting them. Through all phases of life, I had a usual nature to try and write my feelings down and call it art, even if it were scribbles on a Post-It note. Same goes for the song stanzas I wrote in seventh grade that were really loosely based on a Taylor Swift song and are still relatable today.…

Becoming the writer that I am today, was not completely a single bound but rather several small steps. My family has greatly influenced- both positively and negatively- my development as a writer. I have also had the immense privilege of having several amazing teachers over the course of my education. Though, my development as a writer has been most deeply impacted by the division between my personal and academic writing styles and goals. I grew up in Bakersfield, California which is a conservative hotspot in one of the most reliably liberal states in the United States.…

I was not an excellent writer at the beginning of the school year, but I can gladly say now that I have inherited more writing skills that I will benefit from in the future. One of those skills is being able to reflect on every angle on my topic to allow me to organize my ideas accurately. This skill is beneficial to learn, for it helped with my report essay to acquire the focus of my paper more clearly. Moreover, this skill helped me write papers in my other classes more easily and efficiently. Likewise, my voice can be read strongly throughout the personal narrative essay, because the passion I had for my topic was an emotional one.…

A few days came and went and I knew it was time to start working on my next assignment, my first essay. It was supposed to be written about an idea, which was much more abstract than I was used to. As I can pinpoint it in my head, this was the turning point in my writing style. This was my first leap of faith. I had always stuck to the five-paragraph style and always played it safe.…

Through out most people 's primary American education, writing has become an extremely begrudging task. I can personally attest to that felling, teachers hold a lot of power, they can either make it easy for students to fall in love with a subject, or ruin it for them forever. In my writing experience I have had my fair share of teachers doing the latter. From writing dozens "mementos" for my senior memory book, to writing dry papers for standardized state tests year after year, it 's easy to see why writing can leave a sour taste in many people 's mouths.…

This was my first year ever taking a college composition class. It was nothing like I expected because in all of my other English classes I took there was a lot of reading. This year we barely read anything, which I actually liked. We mainly focused on the writing process, writing papers, and writing journals. At first I didn’t really understand why we went through the writing process.…
