My Weaknesses In Joshua Mohr's Memoir

Great Essays
I leave this quarter more aware of my weaknesses than I started. However, I believe that I am also more prepared to address them on a personal level than I was three months ago. I continue to lack follow-through. My desk is littered with sticky notes and unfinished drafts. I believe that the solution to this is to carve a space in my day, every day, for writing creative work. I have made plans to adjust my schedule to address this, and while it will not go into effect until fall quarter, I am starting small by setting my alarm an hour early to write before I go to the gym.
Perhaps my most troubling creative weakness, one that has become apparent over the preceding months, is that I am frequently, factually wrong, sometimes even when I think that I am speaking from a subjective place. I don’t mean that my research is weak or that I make up facts, exactly, but rather that I

He writes about robbing liquor stores and beating men up without sounding like he thinks he’s though and cool. He describes these types of experiences with humor and humility, and over the course of the next few months I intend to carefully reread Sirens to see exactly how he is doing it. Of course, I need to keep my eyes peeled for other writers who are talking about dark and/or savory subjects and notice what techniques they are using to do it well. The other alternative, and one that may be the better and more successful option, would be to move entirely away from personal essay and memoir. My academic writing is, in general, far stronger than my creative work, and if I apply creative craft techniques to academic subjects, I may be able to avoid all the above-named issues. I treat my academic subject with far more care, I believe.
I need to proofread with more zest. I miss opportunities because of sloppy proofreading. I used a grammar-checker program for my undergrad, and I think I need to drag it back out. I refuse to be limited by

Everyone has their weaknesses; Superman’s weakness was kryptonite, Akele’s was his heel, and the Wicked Witch of the West’s was water. Since I am part of “everyone” I have weaknesses, too. The key is creating goals to turning my weaknesses into strengths. Out of all the goals I could have come up with, three seem to be the best. One goal I have for this year is to write my paragraphs as fluently as possible.…

In the quote from Writing Without Teachers, Peter Elbow talks about his ideas on the process of writing. He says, “think of writing as an organic, developmental process in which you start writing at the very beginning – before you know your meaning at all – and encourage your words gradually to change and evolve” (Elbow). Elbow believes that you can’t know what you are going to discuss or to comment on until you are done writing and all of your thoughts finally come together to make sense. He also goes against the idea that writing is only a two-step process, saying that this is the wrong method to go about writing and is a backwards way of thinking. I agree with Elbow’s ideas because this is how I think about the writing process, and is how I write most of the time.…

One of the most important thing I have learned in this course that has positively affected my confidence in my writing skills is the concept of writing a “shitty first draft”. In my midterm self-assessment, I discussed how I thought I was among one of the unlucky ones that was not blessed with natural writing skills. However, through class discussions, I’ve learned that one of the most important competent of professional writing is the need for constant revision. Contrary to popular believe, writing does not come easy to anyone. In order to successfully produce professional writing, it is important that one plan, draft, revise, and edit his or her work.…

“Writing Literacy Memoir” It 's strange how clearly I remember this paper ,where I can not remember what I did last week. It was a Thursday night sometime during May 2013 where it was a hot, humid night and I was exhausted. Where tomorrow I was supposed to start writing my paper about espionage agencies during the Cold War. It was a 10-page research paper on how the Cold War was impacted by the KGB, MI6, and CIA.…

Coming into English 1301 freshman year was something that I was very terrified of. Since I have not attended school in over nineteen years, and high school English class was never my strong point and I found myself continuously irritated and disorganized. I would rush to write essays just to get it over with, using other people’s thoughts and ideas and transforming them into my own about the subject. I under no circumstances connected with any piece that I was asked to write, so enrolling into college to do it all over again was certainly something I dreaded and to some degree wanted to get over with, but now I find myself appreciating writing.…

I earned an 80 out of 100 on part one of the midterm. I didn’t study because the time I had allotted to do so was replaced with an emergency at work. I’m very happy to receive an 80 on something I wasn’t truly prepared for. It brought my previous grade of 99 to a 95. I am not surprised to have a good grade in this class.…

I have also learned and demonstrated that I am capable of producing well written papers and essays In the past four years the areas of writing that I have been the most successful in are essays because I can quickly write on the topic, then compared to my ability to write with nothing to start off of. But over the past four years my ability has significantly increased, I have gone from starting sentences with the same word consistently, and making punctuation errors to making very few. I also had errors in my citations, explanations, and the amount of times that…

Writing is different for everyone. We all have interesting stories to tell. If there is one thing that is true for every writer, it is that we all have an inner critic. Allegra Goodman advises writers how to get past their inner critic in her article, “Calming the Inner Critic and Getting to Work”. Silencing my inner judgments can be one of the most challenging parts of writing, but once the critic is silenced something magical and therapeutic emerges.…

My biggest problems when it came to writing was using commas and semicolons, coherence of my papers and responding to a text. I use the word “was” because I found several resources to help me out with the biggest problems I have when it comes to my writing. The best resources I found for these problems are The Little Seagull Handbook, the MEAL plan template and paperrater.com. One of my favorite resources that I used was the Little Seagull Handbook and this resource helped me with my semicolon and comma problems I had been experiencing. For as long as I can remember I have subconsciously been using comas to extend sentences and those sentences became run on sentences.…
