I didn't know much when I was little. I didn't understand why I had to waltz with my father nor the reason behind his waltzes. Waltzes generally symbolize love and romance but overtime I waltz with my father, I am filled with fright and dismay. He would beat me until the house was torn apart and distress flowed into me with each blow. He would relentlessly strike at me until his fists were battered with my blood. Only now, do I understand his cruel actions. He worked to sustain our family as we clung onto our lives. We saved every single penny so we could afford the simplest human necessities. Alcohol was his way to escape into his fantasies and create perfect waltzes but the only things he created were fearsome death dances. I don't know why

The poem my papas waltz was written by Theodore Roethke as a way to look back on his life. Yet some have read his poem and think his father was abusive. That somewhat makes sense… if you don’t read it right. Most connect alcohol with violence, not knowing that some can drink copious amounts of alcohol and not be drunk. Such is the case for the father in the…

He battled with alcoholism. Using the effects of whiskey to drown out the wicked pain becoming numb, just like his father and generations before him did after they combatted in battle. His wife gave him the option to quit drinking or sign the divorce papers, she had, had enough. He quit drinking because the thought of losing his family and the one he loved was unbearable. This clarity into sobriety strummed up many panic attacks for him which he still encounters today.…

The Melting Pot I choose the “Arabian Waltz” by the Silk Road Ensemble as my song. This group is composed of “distinguished musicians, composers and performing artists from more than 20 countries around the world to celebrate, explore and experiment with a wide variety of cultural approaches to musical performances” (The Silk Road Ensemble with Yo-Yo Ma: Live from Tanglewood). At the beginning of the piece I felt very serene with just a couple of instruments playing. However, when all the instruments joined in. the piece became more exciting.…

Theodore Roethke’s “My Papa’s waltz” and Susan Musgraves “You didn’t Fit” are two poems that capture the love between a child and their father. While “My Papa’s waltz” illustrates the contrast of love and honor and “You didn’t Fit” illustrates a contrast of nostalgia and affection. In both poems the speakers seem to look back on their childhoods with much love and respect for their fathers. While the subject of “My Papa’s Waltz” by Theodore Roethke has spurred passionate academic debate from professors, scholars, and students alike, the imagery, syntax, and diction of the poem clearly support the interpretation that Roethke writes “My Papa’s Waltz” to describe the relationship between him and his father, and a memory they shared together. Roethke made the poem sound as if had two completely different meaning behind it. For example, it can mean that a father and his child are horsing around before bedtime or it can mean that an intoxicated father abuses his child. He wanted to see what us, the audience, had to say when reading the poem.…

Waltz is a dance bom in the suburbs of Vienna and in the alpine region of Austria. As early as the seventeenth century, waltzes were played in the ballrooms of the Hapsburg court. The weller, or turning dances, were danced by peasants in Austria and Bavaria even before that time. Many of the familiar waltz tunes can be traced back to simple peasant yodeling melodies.…

Waltz of the Wallflowers This is a free verse poem written in the poetry sweatshop method. I opened a dictionary to a random page, which contained words that began with “wa,” including waltz, wallop, wallow, wallflower, wallpaper, wamble, waning, and wander, which I used to create the poem. As this method is meant to create alliteration, I extended it to include other words beginning with W, such as whispers, wary, and wassailers, as well as alliteration with T sounds in the sixth line, with the words trample, toes, attempting, twirl, and triple. Some of these words are also euphonic, such as whimsical and wistfully.…

“My Papa's Waltz" by Theodore Roethke was a famed poem from the nineteen forties. Roethke was an American poet and writer who was best known for his poems that depicted social struggle and class injustice. His works, especially “My Papa's Waltz”, can be critiqued heavily by Marxist critics. The Marxist critic was a specific individual that red deeply into literature, knowing every phrase and word had an inner, or aesthetic meaning. Terry Eagleton, one of the most prolific Marxist critics, can be credited for the development of the concept that literature and ideology be spoken as the one (Leitch 2242).…
