My Volunteering Experience As A Dental Assistant

Improved Essays
I have been volunteering at several hospitals under many departments for the past six years. I have volunteering experience in retail pharmacy, floor ambassador, information desk, patient transport, hospital laboratories, hospice/spiritual support, ER, and dental clinics. Currently, I have gained approximately 183 hours of dental clinical observation in the areas of general and pediatric dentistry, endodontics, prosthodontics, orthodontics, and oral surgery.
My first shadowing opportunity was at a private dental office. I had an opportunity to observe different types of treatments and to interact with a variety of patients. I recognized the value of teamwork in delivering the highest quality of dental care by watching how the assistants prep rooms and sterilize instruments, as well as the insurance and billing related work done by front desk staff. I also learned about the basic layout of a dental clinic, such as the areas designated for instruments sterilization, supplies, and x-rays. By asking questions, I acquired new knowledge about the names of instruments and the process behind different dental procedures.

In doing so, I was able to enhance my understanding and exposure to the different working aspects of many dental specialties. Having seen several cases of patient noncompliance, I became well acquainted with many patient management aspects in the

The dental hygienist has become one of the 30 fastest growing occupations, and with the growing population and increase in the elderly, the need for dental hygienists has become much greater. In a typical dentists office the dental hygienist would have many responsibilities, such as teaching clients how important it is to maintain good oral hygiene and instructing them on the principles of preventive oral care. They would also help demonstrate to the patient how to brush and floss their teeth correctly, how to select the correct type of toothbrush for their teeth and analyze patients' diets and counsel them on how to eat right to maintain good dental and gum health. And although dental hygienists duties may vary from state to state due to their…

Completion of an oral health assessment at the first point of contact is an important aspect of nursing care. Use of an oral health assessment tool and examination can act as an aid to treatment, guiding nurses towards a more individualised and holistic plan by providing information on the status of a patient’s mouth as a baseline for ongoing treatment and care. Identification of risk can help staff to provide the level of oral care required to prevent disease and treat any active problems. On ongoing oral assessments will reveal the possible need for referral to appropriate disciplines depending on the findings (Milligan, McGill, Sweeney & Malarkey, 2001). Huskinson & Lloyd (2009) also suggests the involvement of dental hygienists to offer…

Dentists have the power to evoke similar feelings in the community that they serve. I elicited such feelings when I helped assemble and deliver lunches to the homeless with Alpha Phi Omega, a service fraternity. Seeing the reactions of these people after handing them a simple sandwich made me realize how greatly some people have to struggle to attain things that most take for granted. The warmth radiating from their eyes, their simple “thank-yous,” and contagious hopeful smiles filled me with a sense of indescribable joy. This moment made me understand the magnitude of impact that I could have on an underprivileged community as a…

As part of this class the instructor had create a variety of interactive assignments where students get to experience what it feels when having a real patient in front of them. Such was the clinic observation activity where we, the lower clinic class, had the opportunity to observe how students of a higher class were handling a full clinic section with the help of their high qualified instructors. One of the expectations I had for this activity was that I would be able to see the process of care in action, since the clinician brings the patient to the operatory…
