My Visit To Hindu Temple On Lackman Road

Describe the experience

I decided to visit the Hindu Temple on Lackman Road in Shawnee, Ks. My first impression of the temple is that it was clean and well kept. In fact, there were people painting the entry gate as I drove in. As I walked up to the front entrance, I noticed that the sidewalk has many different, colorful patterns. In short, the place seemed inviting.

Once inside the door, my first sense to be overpowered was the smell…incense and lots of it. I located the lobby sign to the worship area and proceeded towards it. As I topped the half-flight of stairs there was a stop sign that read “No shoes beyond this point.” I quickly found a cubby-hole for my shoes. I didn’t notice the foot washing sink until I was leaving….so I

My first reaction to the reading of Body Ritual among the Nacirema by Horace Miner: it was an eye-opening reading experience. I was unaware that this level of primitive magic was still practiced in North America. This group of people do things that have been unheard of in North America and Europe for centuries. Some of the things the Medicine men do make very little sense from a medical stand point. If the treatment is harsher than the disease that has been contracted, is it worth the treatment?…

The Rothko Chapel, located in Houston, Texas, presents a deceptively simple exterior. The ungarnished brick walls lack intrigue or grandeur, the doorway is simply a means of entrance rather than a spectacle, yet over 55,000 visitors are drawn to the location every year (YouTube). The sanctuary inside is just as plain, aside from fourteen imposing murals created by the chapel’s namesake, Mark Rothko. They adorn bare walls, constantly shifting appearance with the light cast from the chapel’s skylight (Dowell). They seem to be the only lively aspects of an otherwise static place.…

During the 1960’s, Jim Jones started the People’s Temple, a racially integrated, socialist, Pentecostal worship-inspired church, which caused controversy after he led the mass religious suicide of over 900 people on November 17th, 1978 at Jonestown, Guyana. While some branded the People’s Temple as cult, David Chidester’s book Salvation and Suicide analyzes the People’s Temple from a religious perspective to understand the underpinnings of its values and ideologies. By doing so, he embraces the identities of those who were part of the People’s Temple, accepting them as part of the very fluid definition of what it means to be human. Chidester’s phenomenological approach successfully and cohesively analyzes the beliefs of the People’s Temple,…

People seek out this place for peace, solace, revelation, and transformation. They include and not limited to fundamentalists, skeptics, seekers, and self proclaimed heretics (Ogilbee,128). The beauty is just not the scenery, but there is beauty in the power that lures a person in.…

Author’s Note: Two weeks ago, I got some feedback from a reader that my reports read more like a recap than a review. That was fair bit of criticism and I haven’t felt right about calling this a review since then. My goal with these reports is to do a ‘thematic narration’ of what happens every week in the Temple, but to accommodate readers that may want a more traditional review I will include a section of analysis after each match in italics. Before the dawn of recorded history, Man struggled to survive in a world dominated by larger, fiercer creatures. Then, Man learned learned to make tools; Man learned to hunt and soon Man began his ascendance to the top of the food chain.…

I approached the front of the building, stepping onto the first step of stairs leading to the entrance like a wedding dress's long tail. Upon opening the door, I can already hear the echoing of the noise the door was making along with my keys, and the slam of it seemed louder than usual. Looking to my right I see the pantry basket half full of donated food, and candles by a Virgin Mary statue. On my left side were the stairs to go to the lower level of the church. I took a deep breath before heading forward, and the only scent I could distinguish was that of burning candle wax.…

As the modern age has brought in a wave of secularism, one would expect the draw of sacred spaces to also dwindle. This has not appeared to be the case. Though many times we see a sacred space as being tied exclusively to religion, these are in fact any place that people or society have set aside. The word “sacred” tend to stir up images of centuries-old churches and monuments, but what each person holds as sacred can differ greatly. In modern society many issues have arisen between those who make claim to an area that they considered sacred and those who disagree with this distinction.…

Right from the beginning, I noticed a pungent odor lingering in the air. Ironically, the smell reminded me of my Uncle Alonzo, who would often live out of his car or vacant structures around the city. I was so nervous I was basically shaking, not paying attention I had almost tripped and fell over a homeless man sleeping in the lobby. I would later find out this gentleman would be the one who I would be working side by side with the majority of the night. Scanning the environment around me, I was caught off guard by the look of the building on the inside.…
