My Virtual Child Observation Report

Using the stimulation of My Virtual Child I could find out how my parental style started and grew as I found out more about the child as he aged through the program. It made me think about my parental sensitivity, and how it changed drastically in the first two years of the child’s life. If I were to describe it at the beginning, it was difficult because all I seemed to do was be around the child and coddle him at any chance that I got. I gave him most if not all my attention. This got to a point around the 5-month mark where he started to prefer me over my partner. And at that point I would have considered myself an intrusive parent, I wasn’t allowing the child to be surrounded by other people and creating a social setting for him. But as he grew older and the 19th month mark started to approach and I was looking in to getting a preschool for him, I noticed that I started to change my sensitivity towards the child due to him acting out and becoming nervous in a social setting, it finally clicked in that I needed to take him out more and introduce him to more people so that he can start becoming socialized. I noticed that as soon as the childhood specialist pointed out a few things that the child was doing I became self-aware in the areas that I’ve been lacking in.

As for giving advice to another young parent who is unsure of the importance of sensitive parenting, remember to always pay attention to your child, but don’t let them be bubble wrapped, they need experience in the world outside of the house just as much as you

Starting the Virtual Life Simulation, I gave birth to a male baby named Leo. Prior to the simulation, I completed a questionnaire about my temperament, emotional wellbeing, as well as my educational strengths and weaknesses. Leo inherited my timid shyness, slow-to-warm up temperament, rapid mood swings, and poor mathematical skills. Consequently, I used an authoritative parenting style which promotes independence but under guidance. My goal was to help Leo achieve his individualistic goals and mitigate negative stresses implemented from genetics and the environment.…

    (1) At 8 months, my baby, Melody, was a slow to warm up baby. Like Chess and Thomas’s description of the slow to warm up temperament, she was less physically active in comparison to others her age, could be temperamental, and showed low mood intensity (Santrock, 2015, p.172). Continuing to 12 months, Melody began to get easier. She seemed to have negative moods only when there was a specific reason for them and had increased her physical activity. Though she started off as difficult, she became easier, a characteristic of slow to warm up babies (V. Rajan, PS200 lecture, Fall 2016).…

Every year, people travel the world with the hope of adopting a child and building a family. Excitement builds day by day as they jump through hoops, are met by towers of paperwork, and take hours of classes. After months, to years of waiting, they finally get the call that they have been matched with a child. After another long wait, they receive the call that their child is ready to come home. Once the child begins to settle in, displays of disruptive behavior such as uncontrollable tantrums and rejection of affection, begin to surface.…

In the online simulation of My Virtual Life, I made critical decisions throughout a child’s development to ensure healthy motor, cognitive, and social skills. Also through this program, I learned the attitudes and behaviors I expose my child to at the beginning of development will greatly influence the personal attitudes and behaviors expressed by my child in later development. The exposure to the product of certain situations allows me, as a parent, to acquire useful skills I would have not known before completion of this program. My baby girl Lily, was born 3 weeks premature and had to stay present in the hospital for 1 week after birth for observation. This situation frightened me exceptionally because I just assumed she would be born…

In the Pre-K classroom that I observed it consisted of several different centers for the children to participate in, such as: block area, dramatic play, art, library, sand/water table, music/movement, sensory area, finger painting, play dough, and the students got the opportunity to make their own snacks. Not only did the students get to participate in centers, they had the opportunity each day to go outside and play on the playground as well as having an interactive lecture every morning at circle time and when the students sat down at their tables to do their daily worksheet. I believe that the Pre-K class I observed was a mix between traditional teaching as well as constructivism, creating a balance between the two. In the morning during circle time, the teacher would “lecture” the students with the letter of the day, go over the date, months, days of the week, shapes, and the numbers up to the date it currently was.…

Parenting can be one of the most stressful and hardest job. There isn’t a right or wrong way of parenting. If there was a right or a successful way of parenting, then there wouldn’t be so many different styles of parenting, ranging from the tiger parenting, helicopter parenting, and the hippie-style parenting. Every parent wants to raise their children the best way possible and to guide them to succeed in life, however, there are some parents who push the bounds of ethical parenting to an extreme. In a segment in ABC News “Good Morning America” they explored the topic of which methods of parenting style are best to raise your children with by interviewing with three teens all coming from different parenting style background.…

I completed my infant observation at the University Child Development Center. The University Child Development Center specializes in childcare for infants all the way up to children age 12. The infant I observed was about eight months of age and was placed in a classroom that usually has a relatively small number of infants for better one on one attention. As I completed my observation, I observed all five developmental domains which include physical, emotional and social, cognitive, adaptive, and language and communication.…

Throughout this hour I took note on his level of social, emotional, and physical development in order to determine his chronological age.…
