My Virtual Child Experience Summary

Decent Essays
Roman greatly enjoyed reading. According to My Virtual Child at age 6, “Roman started to read some easy rhyming books toward the end of kindergarten. In first grade, he really seems to be taking off, and is reading first and even second grade books.” This is where Roman first began to excel in reading. His love for the topic made him advanced and this was consistent throughout the entire Virtual Child experience. Again, although this is positive, it is atypical for a child to be above their grade level in reading.

Today we focused on organizing his notebook and reading the book "Maniac Magee. " Nathan enjoys talking about the book with me and has increasingly shown interest in reading more of the story to learn about the characters. He does struggle at times with reading specific vocabulary words and with reading at a certain pace. I recommend that Nathan get into the habit of reading more frequently aloud so that he can build up his confidence. When we first started reading his book, he did not want to read aloud because he did not want to make mistakes or take too long to read, but the more we read together, the more interested he is in getting through the book.…

From my current placement I have experience of working with a child going through this transition, this had a very big effect on the child holistically. It became obvious to me that the child was very worried and unsettled about this transition as we noticed a negative change in the child's behaviour as he started becoming aggressive to other children and started a tendency to play alone and withdraw himself from the class. There was also a significant decrease in his school work performance as he was very withdrawn and found it difficult to communicate with the other children and sometimes staff. Working within the multi-agency team we introduced this child to an advocate which acted as a professional friend and from this we saw a slight improvement in the child's holistic development and behaviour. When working within the school team, we were part of the multi-agency team who contributed to…

I think having “raise my virtual child” helped me understand the lectures. When I am interacting with my child, I don't necessarily think of the repercussions my interactions have on him: however working with “my virtual child” allowed me to realize my actions have consequences. Working on the assignments on this class created a new perspective towards my own child. It helped me understand more on what he is actually going through and recognize his abilities and restrictions. I started being more involved in his homework, and allowing his to explain himself more.…

Gopnik suggests that counterfactuals are the possibilities of what could have occurred in life. These counterfactuals are the cause, and the effect is the creation of possible worlds. Gopnik defines possible worlds as “the productions of hope and imagination” (163).…

Procedure I performed this game assessment on April 20, 2017. I asked their teacher when it would be a good time for me to pull out my focal child and another student and she told me that after lunch would be best. This was because when they came back from lunch there would only be two periods left, writing and science, before the school day ended. And since it was a nice day they would be going outside to the playground during science. So during writing, which is from 1:42 to 2:22, I had enough time to do my game assignment.…

In society we know that every person is unique and will go about life differently than any other person. Reading groups in schools do not always remember this about children. Often time’s teachers will briefly assess the child’s reading level at the beginning of the year and place the children into groups based on their findings. The issue with this is that the children will quickly learn which group has the best readers and which group has the readers that struggle. Commonly the children in the group that struggle will be labelled with a reading disability.…

In this paper, I will discuss my experience raising a virtual child. I will begin by explaining my initial ideas on how I hope to parent while also explaining how those ideas related to one of the major theories of development. Next, I will discuss the temperament of my child and connect those to a challenge I faced while raising her. Finally, I will touch on where my child stood developmentally at age 12 and whether or not I believe my child had a “good outcome” based on my parenting choices. I named the virtual child I was given to raise Charlotte.…
