The novel A Room with a View by E. M. Forster is set in a time period where class was highly valued and the society was still heavily patriarchal. In the novel Forster develops the plot in a way that one can experience the events that take place in the story and obtain a message. The novel presents various themes but emphasizes mostly on those related to society and class of that time period, and the repression of women and femininity.

Through Lucy’s eyes, one is able to see how society can influence the world in ways that can be so destructive and awful. At the same time, obstructing the things of true value, such as equality, peace, and love. Lucy’s character lets one finally understand that material things and power are not what would lead him or her to the very thing that everyone wants in the world: true happiness. Only generosity and affection would lead one to create a future that is really worth living for and be able to make long lasting relationships with others.
