Authoritarian rule such as that of Hitler’s time, can utilize ultimate scare and control to brainwash the citizens into believing of a false reality where safety can be guaranteed through conformity. This control powers the central authority, wiping away any traces of individualism in the society. Through constructing a dystopian world with communistic tendencies in “Harrison Bergeron”, Vonnegut highlights the theme of losing individualism through absolute conformity and control of society, in an effort to warn individuals of dangers that can arise with absolute authority in societies.…

If every person in today's society had identical personalities, purpose, and a similar or same physical appearance, the community as a whole would struggle. With no individuality among the people, a desired utopia turns into a dystopia. A person of esteemed position abuses his power. As many dystopia novels such as the "Divergent" series and "Anthem" show, a society will become blind, as well as its balance of power, wealth, and knowledge is thrown off when individuality is renounced. Individuality serves an immense purpose in both a group identity and one's respective self that maintains a positive balance in society, which prevents an adverse, dystopian community.…

Individuality is a very general idea about a certain lifestyle. While it can be perceived in many different ways, both Ralph Waldo Emerson and Washington Irving accurately describe it through different viewpoints in their works, titled “Self Reliance,” and “Rip Van Winkle,” respectively. This concept applies to all human lives, as everyone has internal debates on whether they are on the side of blending into society, and therefore not contributing to it, or pulling themselves out of society too much. While many people try to find different compromises between being an individual and being part of society, both of these works demonstrate the values and importance of both pulling yourself out of organized society and including yourself in groups…

Religion teaches people how to use their freedom for the good of themselves and others. It is practically the sole means of counteracting the materialistic aspects of life by taking people’s minds beyond the physical, material aspects of life. By working towards the common good rather than personal gain, people are forced to work together.
