My Vacation In My Life

I had two days to pack my suitcase for a three-week vacation. I had two days to prepare myself that I was even going to be departing on a three-week vacation. Let's rewind to when I was placed on the waiting list for my ninth grade Quebec bursary trip. I was defeated, destroyed, heartbroken. Waitlisted is almost as bad as receiving a straight up “NO!” However only two days before the program was deemed to start, two days before we had to be in another province; 1589 kilometers away, my mother got the email. The email that meant that I would have to prepare myself for my first real trip away from home. Something that made the overnight field trips as a kid, feel like mere moments away from home.

Fast forward to two days later, to my distraught mother, two weary siblings, and a nonchalant father. The airport was inexplicably full for a five am flight. As soon as my flight was announced over the P.A system, it was as though someone flipped the switch to turn off my possibility to feel fear. Quebec was suddenly nothing to fret about. And getting there, on my own, with it only being my second time flying ever, was no big deal. Three planes later and a very stressful (mildly-bilingual) taxi ride to Campus

And boy, was I in over my head. There were so many more stores than what we had back home. They were also substantially bigger, brighter, and all around more impressive. I spent three hundred dollars, in two hours at that mall. But hey, I was splurging, right? Regrettably, it kinda felt like I had flunked part of the test when I had to call my parents and give them the bad news of the damage that I’d done to my bank account, but also send them pleas for more money. Fortunately for me though, after buying all the souvenirs and gifts I’d needed to bring home, spending got easier than just purchasing the first shiny thing that caught my eye. It became easier to budget, just like everything else I was afraid I would struggle with

“You’re not going to feel anything,” the nurse with the fake lips exclaimed. “Yeah, right,” I murmured under my breath as I thought about how many people she had said that to today. Since when do nurses wear more makeup than clowns? Her lips were as thick as my broken, swollen thumb; her eyebrows looked like squirrels above her eyes; she looked worse than a clown. I couldn’t understand how frustrating it might be to mess up and have to start her makeup routine all over; it probably takes her at least two hours.…

Many people characterize their home as safe, secure, or at least comforting. My home was a bit … different. After leaving their home in Nigeria, my parents had to jump from home to home constantly moving me and my family until they could learn how to properly settle in America. My parents were very caring and helpful and kept trying to move us to places where we would have a chance at success. When we finally settled their seemed to only be one logical thing to do... help other immigrants settle here!…

In the 19 years I have been alive, I have lived in three states, five towns, eight houses, and now, two countries. Right before I finished high school my parents decided to move to Guatemala. I welcomed the change because I had been visiting Guatemala every summer since I was 15, and my heart always seemed at peace there. The closest I perpetually felt at home was when I lived in Guatemala, though I resided there for a short time. Every day greeted me with words rolling off my tongue I previously did not know, the taste of delicious and unique foods, and a breathtaking landscape, complete with the view of an active volcano outside of my bedroom window.…

I was drowning out the world with the music playing through my phone, twirling the headphone cord around my finger. My hand brushed across the paper as I erased some pencil markings. My series of rather challenging events seven years ago, when my family moved from Myanmar to the United States. I had just turned nine when my sister received news that she was accepted into UC Berkeley. My whole family was ecstatic as we prepared for our move to San Francisco. Little did I know, San Francisco and Yangon were polar opposites - one a bustling, concrete city and the other a quiet, somber town.…
