I would first talk to the student and try to find out the area they are struggling in and see where I could give them immediate help in the classroom. I would try to find out if there were other issues causing the student to fall behind. If we couldn’t resolve it in class I would reach out to the parent and the coach. Some of the concerns faced are if the child doesn’t get caught up on his work he will become ineligible to play sports. Once he becomes ineligible he will fall into depression and shut down in other areas. He no longer has any motivation to do anything and begins to have a snappy attitude towards other students and adults because he’s irritated he can’t play football. This was also my personal experience with my son. My personal situation was resolved once me the teacher and my son sat down and had a conference. I gave him consequences when he got home and talk to him and explain to him the consequences if he doesn’t get caught up and the rewards he will have if he keeps his grades up. When I talk about rewards I’m not referring to material things but his eligibility to play sports and possibly getting a scholarship to go on and live out his dreams of playing football
