My unique contribution to the Student U community as a College Promise Teacher is providing a realization for hispanic students in the durham public school systems that getting an education and going to college is possible. Being a hispanic teacher presents a comfort zone for them and someone they can come talk to. I once spent my summers sitting in the same chairs as these new students. What did you learn from the experience? How will you take what you have learned to impact the students with whom you will work at Student U this summer?

I was halfway done with my first semester and midterms were coming up. I had five classes at the time and I wasn’t discouraged but I should have been. I was confident about all of my classes until I realized that I wasn’t prepared to study. I hadn’t set aside any time to review for my Art History Midterm Exam. The class was easy going with no homework so I focused my attention towards my other demanding classes. Come midterm exam, I had little retention of information from cramming the night before and I bombed my first exam. The class wasn’t looking so good in my favor as it only consisted of 4 grades throughout the whole semester. I earned a failing grade on the exam. I was shocked at how carelessly I had let myself slip up academically. I plugged in a couple of numbers and I had to get a 97 or above in order to get a B. I began to sob and freak out about how I was ever going to get that grade. I had the option to withdraw the class to just relieve the stress I was going through. Just before I was about to withdraw the class I ran by a conversation with my counselor who motivated me to stay in the class and set my mind on getting the best grade I could get. I decided to stay in the class and finish strong. I studied

He’s always pushed me to become a hard worker. Back in first grade, I would spend my summers with him in the dining room table working out multiplication problems. I dreaded it so much but I didn’t realize how good I was becoming with numbers. By the time I had mastered that I was moving on to square roots and exponents. It didn’t end there. He recognized that I was getting older and by the 5th grade I started helping him out in the yard and our huge back yard. I was dead by the afternoon. My grandpa never failed to wake me up. As I got older it became more of a responsibility for me to help him out. I used to complain about doing yard work and my grandpa was always famous for telling me “You have to work if you want to eat. Nobody is going to look after you, clean after you, or work for you in the future. You’re whining now but later you’re gonna say I should’ve listened to my grandpa”. If that isn’t the truth. I remember those exact words come out of his mouth in spanish on a hot summer day. I was never too sure what he meant until now that I listen to him more. Having him there as a personal coach pushed me to do well in school. For a long time he lived with me until my senior year of high school when he left to Mexico. I miss him so but he has transformed me into the hard worker I know I can be

During my junior year at Stephen Decatur High School, I was enrolled in American Literature with Mrs. Moore. At first I thought she was a hard teacher because she made us write a lot. I enjoyed writing creative pieces, but in her class she gave us a prompt or we had to analyze a text and prove how the author believed in the American Dream or not. The first essay we wrote I scored a 29 out of 30 and was proud of myself because English has not always been my strongest subject. Our next assignment was on The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald.…

At Xavier University we believe in the “All for One and One for All” philosophy; showing that camaraderie and equality among all are still possible. One way Xavier lives up to its support for students is through the one-year long Smooth Transition mentoring program. I served as a smooth transition mentor to three incoming first-year students during the 2016-2017 academic year. In order to ensure that they have a successful first year at Xavier, I informed them about the resources Xavier University provides, including the writing center, mathematics lab, tutoring services, Ohio link, and much more. I also advised them to make good decisions and form relationships with people who would motivate them to succeed.…

My grades this past year were and are not indicative of who I am as a student, or as a person in general. My junior year of high school, I decided to do PSEO, thinking it was an easy way to get credits for both high school and college. I did not realize the struggle I was going to have just trying to be accountable for myself during my senior year. My daily schedule consisted of work, soccer, managing the high school boy’s hockey team, volunteer work, spending time with my high school friends and taking college courses. I took the most challenging classes through Anoka-Ramsey Community College, thinking that like high school these would be the best for me.…

This class was Honors Chemistry, it was extremely difficult and I tried everything I could possibly do to try to be successful in that class. I did extra homework, staying after school, and staying up remarkably late just to try to understand a concept that others seemed to fathom so easily. The feeling of failure from not doing strong in this class made me feel as if I could never understand this class. The feeling of failure for anyone is not an enjoyable feeling, it mostly can cause a stress on your life, when you know you are able to succeed. I decided to take the initiative and try as hard as I can to bring my grade up with the final exam.…

When I was little, I wanted to be a chemist. I imagined myself in the lab coat and with goggles on, carefully pouring electric blue liquids and jade green foam back and forth into various containers, until something had exploded and I had discovered the best way to make flowers the size of people. As I grew up, I lost this fantasy, but I gained more knowledge on how I wanted to influence the world. Funnily enough, I discovered what I really wanted to do when I started working at Chick-fil-A during the summer before my sophomore year. All of my friends had warned me against working in fast food, quoting horrible smells and ridiculous customers and tons of grease.…

Before this class began I expected this class to show me the ins and outs of being a successful college student. I had to stay on top of my assignments because nobody else would be checking for me.…
