Essay On Capernaum Camp Experience

My understanding of intellectual disabilities has expanded because now I am able to relate the specifics from our textbook to experiences I have had while helping at Younglife’s Capernaum camp, for special needs individuals. I was surprised to read in our textbook that limited intellectual ability is defined as a score of 70 or less on intelligence testing. The Capernaum camp experience is for anyone with a disability, whether physical or intellectual, and the range of issues spans greatly when we are at camp, because so many regional groups come during the same period of time.
A couple of times a year I am the camp nurse for the group, and the camp is about an hour away. I say that because transporting everyone can be an adventure in and of itself, between anxieties, excitement, wheelchairs, walkers, and more excitement! It is always great to see not only our first time campers being excited, most away from home for their first overnight trip, but our returning campers get very excited too. Regardless of their level of intelligence, physical challenges that they have to compensate for, or what their home situation is, we do our best to get everyone there that wants

To me, each person that comes to camp is special in their own way, whether it’s a Capernaum camp, or a middle school or high school Younglife camp. Also, I do not know what score our Capernaum campers would have on an intelligence test but they each have strengths that are amazing to me. One is able to ask what your birthday is and can tell you what day of the week you were born, and what day your birthday will be, on any year you ask about. That’s amazing to me. A Capernaum camper from another area knows everything there is to know about heating and air conditioning systems. It’s his area of interest and his strength. It keeps him engaged with others and it is a unique way to connect

I have learned so much from my experience as a camp counselor, and I have also met many people that I would not have had the chance to meet, without this experience,” said former camp counselor, Lyra Schroeder. Many people have been attending the camp since they were children, and 90% of the campers are returnees from previous years. “Overall, Beacon Lodge is a great place for people with disabilities to come and have the typical summer camp experience but adapted to their unique needs. In the adult camp, the campers have friendships with other campers that go back decades. It’s also an opportunity for the campers to come back to a place they know well and feel comfortable in, and be able to participate in activities they may not get to do out in the world,” said…

On my one and only vacation last summer, I got the privilege on going to my first Younglife camp. The camp name was Carolina Point in Brevard, North Carolina. At the camp they had many activities: swimming, go-carting, disc golf, mountain biking, zip-lining, paddling boarding, and hiking. My favorite part about this trip was the day we took a whole camp trip to hike the nearby mountain. At the camp they had some kids with disabilities that couldn’t necessarily get up the mountain by themselves.…

Camp is place unlike any other. It is a place that people’s wall begin to fall down and new relationships are formed. This is bound to happen when you drop 200 teenagers in the middle of the Smoky Mountains without any of their electronics. I got to be a part of all of the behind the scenes work, but also daily interactions with all of the campers due to my job at camp.…

Most teenagers would probably tell you that the beginning of their adulthood was marked by having to do laundry for the first time, or being able to drive alone, or perhaps no longer sitting at the children's table at family events. But for me, it happened this past summer, when I made the very difficult decision that I would not return to Coleman Country Day Camp. To those who were not fortunate enough to have grown up at summer camp, this might not seem like such a big decision to make. But Coleman was my outlet, my second home for ten consecutive summers and spending those two months anywhere else seemed inconceivable to me.…

The Holocaust Genocide took place when Adolf Hitler came to power and decided that he was going to blame everything relating to their economic troubles, on the Jews. Hitler had an army of people under his control known as the “Nazi Party” that were willing to do anything he wished, such as forcing the Jews that resisted to go to the camps. The camps that they were placed in were referred to as “Concentration Camps.” In these camps the Jews were forced to work and if there was any resistance as far as doing what they were told, they were killed. In my observation school site, to be eligible for special education the student must meet one of the IDEA disability categories. This disability must interfere with the student’s ability to learn. In this school the students are given an IQ test, if the results show that a student’s score is under 70 this can indicate that the student may have an intellectual or developmental disability. This IQ score along with the performance test scores are used in determining the eligibility of the student for special education services. Eligibility seems to be a very confusing step in the special education process at this school.…
