My Understanding Of History: The Past, Present, And Future

Growing up history was my favorite subject in school. I would read books that gave me a glimpse into the life of those before me. My fascination surrounded the period in which my grandparents grew up. They would tell me stories about what life was like and what it meant to live in a world following the Great Depression. Thus, my understanding of history helped me to better understand and appreciate my grandparents. Why they liked certain musicians, movies, literature, political parties, and so on became more evident as I learned about their past. I was also obsessed with my family’s lineage. My mother would tell me about her grandparents, and how they came to America. From Ireland my ancestors were taken hostage and brought to America as indentured servants. While from Italy my ancestors came to America as refugees, fleeing the Sicilian mafia. To me it is important to understand and acknowledge my grandparents and our ancestors, because every breather I take is because of them. Knowing their world helps me to know mine. That is what history is to me. History is understanding that the past, present, and future are interconnected and dependent on each other. It surrounds us with every second and every day. Our time is precious and important. What we have done, what we do, and what we will do all play into the history of the world. For it is our past, present, and future intertwined that creates the world as we know it. This why it is important to learn from our past and have open minds in our present. As we look to the future, we must be more conscious about our actions. The world is not ours to destroy, but rather to make better and contribute too. Most of our problems are man-made, and thus we can fix ourselves.
