Sherry assigned her students to write about their experiences in school and some students wrote how wished they were held back or to have someone who cared enough for their academic career. Prior to teaching her adult literacy class, she used to blame her student’s poor academic skills on their lifestyles and their home environment. Sherry describes how teachers have methods to make their students concentrate, but if all fails; there is another method they could use, it is called the trump card of failure. The trump card of failure is to flunk a student if they simply don’t pay attention in class or they don’t do the work that was assigned. The trump card of failure can also be used as a scare tactic by letting the student know they will flunk the class. Later, Sherry notes that the trump card of failure was used on her youngest son, as a result, he changed his priority and went from flunking the class to passing the semester with an A. Herbert Kohl’s, “I Won’t Learn from You” is a novel that explores the lesson in how not to teach. Kohl discusses in detail ways in which student decides not to learn and the motivation behind why they have come to this decision. He has created a philosophy that allows both teachers and students to work together to become the creators of the students’ education and their success. Teachers can continue to teach, however, students are only going to take what is being taught and turn it into learning if they choose to and see a good reason to. Often times, students have a good reason as to why they choose not to, and this is what Kohl’s novel is about.…

They had never before carried the true burden of failure, and that bad grade could never tarnish their reputation once they left. In some ways Professor Neusner was right when he wrote his speech about his spoiled graduates. A lack of passion is common on college campuses and runs through most student’s veins. Another example of how the education system is weakening is best modeled by this generation of teenagers. This generation has struggled with competition being removed from classrooms, grade scales being based on effort instead of achievement and overall, grades being more imperative than knowledge. In a brief interview around the Cypress Lake High School’s hallways, seventy-five percent of surveyed juniors and seniors reported feeling unprepared for the future. Cristina Hernandez, Class President and Advanced Placement (AP) student, stated that, “I had to be very independent mid-junior year, I always cared for school and doing well but I never knew that school was an investment for my future or that I needed certain things to get into college;…

She claimed that it was becoming a normality for the majority of the class to receive A's; a B was no longer considered a good grade. The intended audience for this work of writing would be teachers, students, and parents. It can relate to teachers by the struggles they face, persuade students to not argue with their teachers about grades, and communicate to parents that sometimes their children are not deserving of higher grades.…

One day she came up with a bright idea and told her students, “You were chosen to be in my class because I am the best teacher and you are the best students.” Pierson, who came from a background of parents who were educators, knew how to inspire and inject enthusiasm, and, most importantly, try to build a relationship with her students. It was not easy; some of these kids were frequently absent and had negative attitudes, but it just took one action to make a reaction. If instead of cheating, Lewis had decided to use his capabilities to encourage his students to work on their grades, now he would be a hero instead of a cheater, and not only for his current students but also for the incoming generation as well.…

Like many students, college students always want the easiest way to attain a good grade. That was what I experienced in high school. Teachers give credit for work completed rather than the accuracy of the work and students would receive credit for things that had nothing to do with materials being taught in class. For example, my teacher would give extra credit on essays for bringing tissue boxes to class. In high school, students get used to slacking off and procrastinating however teachers seemed like they did not care to help discourage these bad habits.…

It has helped me put others at the same standard as myself and it helps me show my character.…

But as she was thinking she wondered what other kids went through that did not have quality teachers that went the extra mile for their students. While Barry was applauding the quality of teachers at her school Christina Fisanick implied that all teachers should be like Barry’s teachers. The quality of teachers is a big part of why some low-income students do better than others as Fisanick the editor of “Introduction to Has No Child Left Behind Been Good for Education? : At Issue”, says that every student needs a quality teacher in order to succeed in school.…

However giving more F’s to the students does not prove that they deserve the grade. An F should be given to the students that deserves it, such as students that do not do their homework, do not show up to class, or cheat on test/homework. If a student does things that show that they deserve the F, then it should be given. In a recent discussion with parent LaToya Jackson, a mother of two, she discussed that although the educational system has a few flaws, she feel that giving more F’s to students would not solve the problems throughout the educational system.…
