Lynn Smith- Lovin a Duke University sociologist and Co- author to “Friendless in North America” written by Ellen Goodman is about a face-to-face study of 1,467 adults. Goodman’s study reported that one-fourth of these adults have nobody to talk to about important matters, a quarter reported they are only one person away from nobody, and the number of people who have no one to talk to has doubled from 1985 to 2004. Also, the number of confidants of the average person has, has gone down from three to two. I can agree to this on some levels. In my own life I’ve had my own social circle shrink. According to Goodman “We might be having fewer intimates but, we are more intimate with them.” Even when telling the truth can be a difficult thing to do I generally have more respect for the ones who are honorable and stay the tougher things to me. However, when it comes to avoiding trouble and especially protecting someone 's feelings, many of us find ourselves being untruthful. When it comes down to it, I’d rather hear from a friend if something is wrong. I agree with Goodman when she says we have become closer to our spouses. Personally, I have to say my most honest relationship is with my Michael. He makes me a much more candid person, and this has allowed us to become closer in our relationship. Even when he says things I don 't particularly enjoy I know it is coming from a place of love.
During my life I have been exposed to many different kinds of people of all ages and ethnicities which have taught me things that I may have never thought of. Thinking back, no two relationships have ever been the same because of the different things we have shared or been through together. Some friendships I would like to forget and others, like the one with Michael will stay with me forever. If nothing else, I have learned so much and grown from our friendship.
