I decided to visit Costco because I knew it would have a greater amount of people shopping at once than other stores near me, such as Fry’s and Safeway. This would allow me to observe a greater number of interactions with more ease. Costco is a membership-only warehouse that sells items in larger quantities than a regular grocery store. Costco claims to have lower prices as well, and they usually carry few brand options for the same product. I went to Costco on Monday at 10:00 am, which is when they open. I waited in line with about other 50 people, who like me, got there about 10 minutes before they opened. Before going to Costco I had read about gender roles in the advertisement of food. This could support the theory that women are the ones in charge of the shopping, so even when males come to shop, they still under the supervision of a female. I kept observing this pattern for the entire time I was monitoring people at Costco. There were few exceptions, such as an older male buying beer and a man on his 30s who had two young children on his shopping cart. However, the rest of shoppers I observed were females and couples. There were about the same number of single fathers and single mothers. I observed the same behavior when it came to young children, such as carrying them in the shopping cart. A difference I noticed was that women seemed to have more conversation with their young than men. While men were focused on shopping products, females were focused on talking with their babies about the surroundings. For example, there was a young mother of less than 30 years old. She had a son younger than a year old. She was talking to him about the flowers and how beautiful they were, and responding to what the child was saying. I did not observe any of the single fathers talking to their young
