Personal Narrative: My Trip To Dallas

My trip from Kinshasa to Dallas/Fort-worth for higher education purposes Do you know that the important thing in the life? It is not what the instructors taught us, but it’s what we make day by day for ourselves using what the instructors gave us and to make sure that we are useful for ourselves and our community. In July 2014, I graduated as the top student of my class and among the top 10 students of my city. I had my high school degree in science, and specifically in Biochemistry. Consequently, my parents decided to send me to a foreign country in order to develop my intellectual capacities; so that they hoped this would be useful for my country in general and for my family in particular. In that perspective, I decided to travel to the …show more content…
Right after my visa approval, I bought my plane ticket for $1470 and traveled alone for the first time in my life. During the trip, we landed in Brussels (Belgium) and went on to Washington, DC where I changed airplanes. I left my home at 8:30 GMT+1 and I traveled at 11:55 PM. The trip was very long; it took us 8 hours to land on the Brussels international airport, where we spent 6 hours waiting for another plane. At 12:30 GMT+1, we left Brussels to Washington, DC where we landed at 2:30 GMT-6. Then I waited for the last plane from Washington to DFW that took 3 more hours before arriving in Dallas at 7:35 Central American time. At the airport, I met my driver who drove me to an electronics store and then to my host family. Even though traveling or moving from your country to a foreign country is very challenging, it presents as many advantages as disadvantages because you need to learn and do many things either for your …show more content…
Culturally, I faced food differences between the U.S and the Congo. For instance, in the U.S for breakfast people eat cereal, eggs, bread, etc. for lunch they eat fast food and for dinner they eat hearty food. Unlike the U.S in my country and especially in my family, we eat energetic food in the morning, slight food during the day and hearty food for dinner. And also the quality and quantity of food are different due to geographical locations. Besides food, I also challenged several social problems in different situations. For example, in my country people are not really strangers to each other. We greet each other in public transportations; we help each other in different ways; we talk to each other like brothers. The same thing happens when we meet each other abroad. People can think that we have known each other for a while. In contrast, people in the U.S are animated by the civil inattention. No one cares about another on the street. I seat close to people in a bus or a train, nobody say “Hi” to me. Everyone has headphones in his ears. That is considered as a bad behavior in the African

Not all farmers can produce a variety of food selections. Because I read the assignment before attending this event, I thought about how and where the foods were sourced and produced and it did affect the way I felt about the food I consumed. If I were to eat at a restaurant then that would be the last thing I would think about. I typically just enjoy my food without thinking much about the process from farm to table.…

The Midwest is home to states with rich cultural backgrounds and popular tourist attractions. To take a break from the busy schedule I have as a student, and to avoid writing more essays like this, I went on a vacation to Michigan with my mother and two siblings. We visited South Haven, a pleasant port city on Lake Michigan’s east coast, and Detroit, the famous largest city in Michigan. These areas interest me because there’s plenty to do; there are amazing restaurants, breath-taking scenery, and family-friendly, inexpensive entertainment. South Haven is famed for its relaxed atmosphere and homely feel.…

Brownsville, Texas is the town that I was raised in and can still call home. It was rich with Mexican culture and delectable, greasy tacos but it was still an economically disadvantaged city meaning that there were never enough resources to guide students to better opportunities. Of course, I never knew I was deprived of such an apparent luxury until I came to The University of Texas at Austin. When this realization came, I became frantic because of how behind I felt. I began looking for all sorts of resources and opportunities the university had to offer.…

Coming to Houston from a country where opportunities are very limited and economy is a challenge for the youthful, has made the last two years a little rough and hopeful at the same time for me and my family. Therefore, school is the most important in my life, after my family; I dedicate my time and my efforts to not become just the first professional in my family, but also to be an exemplary person in society thanks to the values that my parents have instilled in me. Before coming to Houston, I studied three years of Industrial Design in Colombia; although I loved my career, I think that I was too young (15 years old) to appreciate what school was providing me and to be sure what I wanted to do in life. Once I got here I understood that what…

Paragraph My trip to Texas and New Mexico was fun and interesting. I went to Texas and New Mexico in 2014's summer with my family to visit my brother who lives in Texas, and to have vacations too. We went shopping, had barbecues, met people, went to church, and visited some cities such as Dallas, Arlington, El Paso, Ruidoso, and Alamogordo. We also visited some places like the Cowboys Stadium, Wet N' Wild Waterworld, the Museum of Space History, and White Sands National Monument.…

Two thousand five hundred eighty-seven. I could take an eight-hour flight or a casual thirty-seven-hour drive, but no matter what, I am still two thousand five hundred eighty-seven miles away from my home in New Haven, Connecticut. Being a college freshman, trying to juggle class, homework, projects, studying, sleeping, eating, and athletics; finding the travel time to go home is an almost impossible task. Add in the cost of the $600 flights round trip and there is no chance a student can go visit home when they feel a little homesick. I on the other hand had never even fathomed being homesick from the frozen tundra I called home.…

The Dallas Museum of Art was the complete opposite of what I imagined it to be like. Before attending the museum, I had very low expectations. When I thought of “art museum” I imagined dusty walls lined with undiverse and outdated art. I imagined a place old couples went to because they had nothing better to do with their time. A place where the past lingered and grew old as civilization quickly moved on and forgot about it.…

Last December, I was on my twin bed sitting by my window, blasting to Lady Gaga, when I came to the realization that I was never really me. The identity of the timid, smart Hispanic girl I had fabricated to please my English teachers in high school was not who I was. There are numerous amounts of people in the world who spend the rest of their lives not knowing who they really are, and a bigger quantity of people who hide their true selves; I was one of the few percentage who lived in denial of their sexual orientation. My whole life I rejected the possibility of fancying the opposite sex because of the environment I grew up in. In 6th grade when I was 11 years old, I was jealous of how much one of my female friends would pay attention to our…

It was an early Monday morning, I was pretty happy at the time because this trip was going to get me out of a full week of school. So, it all began at the airport, looking out of the window I could see our plane, It was a bit intimidating and I was really nervous because this was going to be my first time on a plane. Nevertheless, I had nothing to worry about though because soon enough I would come to realize that, the time I would be spending in Puerto Rico would teach me to truly enjoy the great experiences in life. So we were off, I could not wait to begin my adventure in Puerto Rico and meet all the amazing new people. When my grandmother and I landed in Puerto Rico I had no idea what I was in for, we planned the trip last minute and had no plans when we got there, or so that's what I anticipated.…
