My Traumatic Experience

Improved Essays
Throughout my life I have had to deal with some pretty scary things. As a child, and even now, these things take a huge toll on how I deal with other things. I have always been an anxious person and I can definitely say that traumatic experiences (like the one I am writing about) have changed my mindset and how I live my daily life. The day started of fairly normal. My friend had just got her license and she offered to take me to Washington, Missouri to go shopping and just have a fun day out. I was really excited to finally go out without a parent and to hang out with a friend. Even though I had a nagging feeling like I should’ve just stayed home and help my mom out around the house, I just ignored it and decided to go anyway. Now, when …show more content…
The drive over there was safe and we were having a good time. During the ride we were listening to the radio, talking, and just genuinely having a good time. The first place we stopped was at a makeup store called Ulta because I needed to pick up a few things. We took our time in the store and looked around, but we started to get a little hungry so we decided to go get some lunch at McDonald’s. We got our food and left to go by the river that runs through the city and draw. We got back on the highway and so far everything was okay. She pulled up to a stop light and my friend got in the lane to turn. I was using my phone for directions and repeating to her the way it was telling us to go. She turned on her blinker and looked both ways and the path seemed clear. We started to turn and the next thing I know we’re stopped and my friend is yelling and asking if I am okay. I sat there for a minute in shock. I didn’t really know what had happened; it kind of seem like everything just stopped, or like time had moved in slow motion. I looked around me and the other car was stopped and so were we. I was covered in the sweet tea and the food that we had just ordered. I didn’t know what to do; I was in complete …show more content…
I have panic attacks almost every time I get in the car and I honestly wonder if I will ever be able to drive myself. My 16th birthday is in less than two weeks and I am even scared to take my driver’s test. But, with the bad comes the good. I am definitely much more cautious when driving now which is extremely good for myself and those around me. I also cherish things a lot more because I realize how quickly things can be taken from you. Life can be gone in the blink of an eye so now I always make sure to tell my family I love them before they go anywhere (I am actually quite obsessive about it and I get nervous if I forget to tell them that). The biggest lessons learned are to always be aware of your surroundings (especially when driving), and to live each day like it’s your last because it can literally be over in the blink of an

When it comes to understanding yourself and your personality on a deeper level than normally, you must take personal stories into perspective that have shaped your life while growing up. According to McAdams, “defining oneself through a personal story is an act of psychological and social responsibility” (Engler 2009). Psychological and social responsibility relate to how you act onto actions around you and how you tie society into your viewpoint of the world. In other words, explaining yourself through a story can show several things such as how your emotions played an affect, the type of response you displayed to something that happened, and as well as the lessons you learned through a personal but also social aspect. In addition, McAdams…

Trauma can occur to anyone who has been violated, hurt, or threatened, or to those who witness these acts (Smyth, 2013). Clients may have experienced trauma through child abuse, domestic abuse, sexual assault, natural disasters, life threatening illness, being threatened by death or harm, serious accidents, and many other situations where danger is present (Smyth, 2013). Trauma Informed Care (TIC) is an intervention acknowledging how all types of trauma may be impacting clients, and recognizing and responding to trauma in a safe and empowering way (Trauma-Informed Care, 2012). Experiencing trauma can significantly impact a person, and clients who have been through trauma may develop various mental health issues, such as anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, childhood behavioral disorders, substance abuse, or personality disorders (Smyth, 2013). Trauma often results in a cycle of trauma, with the traumatic event eliciting a bodily response, followed by an emotional response, and then a behavioral response; after this, each time a trigger…

This statement concludes the weakest people to the strongest people; even a person with the highest power like Barak Obama or the person who owns the production of oil. They all have their darkest fears, and fear something. I am one of many fears. First off, the definition of fear and how fear is ignited should be explained.…

Whichever way it occurs, that person is mentally, emotionally, and physically thrust into a horrific situation. It was first brought to the medical community’s attention due to the overwhelming number of combat veterans that suffered from it; hence the original names of “shell shock” or “battle fatigue”. Many things are happening to or going on in their body and mind all at once: fear, shock, disgust, disbelief, pain, anger, fright, panic, and more.…

I think that everyone will experience a traumatic event in their life which will cause a division of their life into a before and after. However, I do believe that everyone that experiences a trauma will be scared. I have experienced many hurdles and have had my share of trauma however when I began to open up and recognize that these are not setbacks but rather the chance to accept and learn from these experiences I saw growth within myself. Through counseling as a young woman, I realized that it is best not to repress feelings although I thought I had conquered or resolved issues I realized during my undergrad there were still underlying emotions. Growing up in Detroit I experienced many things happening in the street and family members…

The most valued lesson I got from this was to appreciate every moment and the memories you get to make with your family. These are the only things that will be kept after they are gone forever. Also I believe that if you don’t value this kind of small stuff that in reality means a lot then you are not really living life to the fullest. Appreciation towards my family will be something I show to them from now until GOD decides that it’s time to leave this earth. I believe that GOD has a plan for everyone in this life and once we accomplish that plan he wants us back with him.…
