English 1301: A Short Story

Decent Essays
The story that I want to share is, the basic yet often talked about transition, between high school and college. High school was so much easier for me back then, you could get away with so much more and not worried about homework as much. Now in college, it feels like I’ve sat down for the longest, scariest, most agonizing rollercoaster of my life. English in high school wasn’t much of a concern to me. Teachers didn’t persist on teaching students good writing habits or the depth of what writing can go into, like they do in college. Going to my first day of college, I didn’t know what to expect and was open to new things. My first day at English 1301 I was able to see what the goal of writing was and the plans that the teachers were setting, …show more content…
I was able to perceive reading and writing in a more deeper and understanding level, actually see the purpose behind it all. People sometimes do something and never really asked, “why?” I feel like that’s what I was missing in high school. Seems like Teachers follow a linear teaching style and never question the course curriculum they have to follow. Never go into a more understanding of what a course is about. Reading and writing have much more to it then words and sentences. It has meaning, picture, audience, information, etc. In high school they say read a short story and summarize what you learned. Mostly about vocabulary or basic meaning of the passage. I never say look for what you could add or what audience the author to sharing to, just basic stuff. Its in college I learned to progress my writing style and reading. I actually even got a liking to English, more of writing than reading. Regardless though English isn’t my favorite subject. I’ll still have other subject and hobbies I enjoy more because that’s the way I am. Its this that affects my reading and writing, because everyone’s way of writing and understanding of reading is different. Its what they do on the side that makes their character that can have an effect on their reading and writing …show more content…
Nobody enjoys doing the work but its what makes people better, you learn a lot more when you put in effort for something, especially reading and writing. You can accomplish many things with the power of knowledge. Learning is a major key to succeed in life if you are to become somebody greater than you image. Being able to learn reading and writing is a necessity in everyday life. Sure you need it to get through school, but it comes into effect when working in your future career or when reading street signs down the road. You probably don’t notice how much you do it on a daily basis. But you need to see how you can express yourself through reading and writing. Some of my friends’ use reading or writing as a way to get away from stress. They use what they know to help themselves. They can in turn also use it for other reasons of their choosing. Honestly, I didn’t know what college was going to have in store for me. 1301 was a shock for me and now 1302, I don’t know what to expect but more lectures on understanding reading and writing, and of course putting it to use in

When I first started ENGL 1101, I expected it to be like high school all over again. In high school I was always in the more advance classes. I wrote essays, did book reports and was given a rubric to go along with so I knew what my teacher expected. My expectations was not what I was not what I was expecting nor was prepared be to graded so hard on my essays and journals. I can honestly say I didn’t have clear understanding over the work that I was getting graded over.…

When I think about writing, I always think about English classes doing most of the writing but writing is essential in every subject. I label myself as not being a writer but someday it’s going to be my duty to teach others to be. In conclusion, reading and writing was like day and night for me. I always valued reading over writing when I was younger. When I got older, my views on reading and writing began to evolve.…

The writing process worked for me because as a premed student, I do not want less than a B on anything. In English 101 and 102, I was able to get A’s on everything. However, Justin China, a sophomore Computer Science major, at Mcneese State University said I use to think the writing process wasn’t necessarily an essential key for the perfect paper. When an essay was assigned, I would wait until the day before the due date, because I…

Finally, finding a voice within the writing to me takes a lot of understanding. Murray states, “Its what is between the words on the page, which glues the piece together.” Writers have their own voice and I believe that it is good to put it out on paper. I never really understood the concept of having a voice within my writing until reading more and more excerpts in school. There are different tones that authors uses for the audience to feel a certain…

In the past semester, I have grown as a writer holistically. Before I began my first-year English composition course, I wrote the DSP (Directed Self-Placement) test. The prompt was whether or not college is worth the investment for the current generation. When I read the instructions that the essay wouldn’t be graded, I knew I could write anything just for the sake of finishing the assignment. When I reread my DSP essay I realized the lack of effort I put into the writing. The syntax of the essay feels off, because of the constant tense changes.…

Reading from this excerpt allows an understanding as to what someone as a person can do to make writing much simpler and still have successful writing skills. With “Habits of Mind” a student’s writing will show how lively they approach a topic but when in high school a student has yet to use all these habits. In high school students are taught to approach a topic with curiosity and creativity; many students can achieve this but the problem would be that they have not used all other important strategies. Even if students are aware of the abilities they have they may not use all or lack the most important one. With all these habits in mind I realize that my high school reading and writing skills and abilities do include a majority of these habits along with some strategies.…

In the beginning of the semester I entered class as a novice student. I knew my writing was okay, but I wanted it to get better. I feel as though writing is the only way I can make people sit and listen to what I have to say. However If they are unable to fully grasp my ideas or emotions in my words then really I am just as silenced as I am when I speak. Coming into class I knew I had a way I was used to writing but I did not know if my writing was truly effective.…

When my advisor told me there was going to be a Comp one class and also a Comp two class that I had to take I was worried. I have learned so many things about correctly writing over this semester that it is very insightful now. I will always be the reader, not the writer but that ok because I have had a wonderful Comp teacher that has helped me more than I could have dreamed.…
