Electric Boat Reflection

Improved Essays
During my time at Electric Boat, I served as the lead engineer assigned to develop a component refurbishment program. Given the long life expectancy of submarines, inevitably some manufacturers either go out of business or no longer support a certain product or component. Once that obsolescence is identified, a replacement solution is required unless there is a sufficient inventory of repair parts. Understanding that such circumstances could create additional business for Electric Boat, I worked to formalize a method for receiving used/failing components and returning them as “ready for issue assets.” I was able to establish procedures that created a flow path for the refurbishment of these components by leveraging the existing trade skills …show more content…
Without the ability to compile and leverage data to make a strong business case, the refurbishment program might never have achieved its full potential. To date, my engineering experience, undergraduate education, and Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification have all provided me with specific knowledge of, and experience with, component design, evaluation, and manufacturing. I now intend to pursue my MBA at Harvard to capitalize on what I have learned in order to help companies with significant and strategic business …show more content…
These were week long trips where you served with people and partner organizations that work daily to improve the lives of those less fortunate. My first trip was to Laredo, TX to work with Habitat for Humanity. Having the opportunity to work alongside the future homeowners was the most rewarding thing I have done in my life. Hearing their stories and understanding how they connected with Habitat for Humanity was something I wish everyone could experience. Upon returning to Villanova I shared my story and wanted to participate in as many future trips as possible. I would later go to Lexington, KY, Miguel Aleman, Mexico and was able to organize, plan and lead my own group of students to Slidell, LA. These service experiences have helped to shape me as a person. I regularly reflect on them and see how they influence my actions. It may be something as small as talking to someone in need, donating food to the local food pantry, or helping with community fundraisers, but I know it all makes a

For my sixty hours of volunteer work I decided to volunteer at a Child Life Center which was in a poverty stricken area in Norfolk, Va. At the child life center my job as a volunteer was to assist the children with their homework, help the staff monitor the children on local field trips, as well as serve as a positive role model for the children. The experience I had at Park Place Child Life Center was one I will honestly never forget. Although I didn’t get any actual counseling experience, I was able to learn the ways that the non-profit organization received their funding, I was able to gain experience in working with the youth, and I was also able to make a positive impact on the lives of children who were considered “at-risk youth”. To go there every day and be able to see the change the children had in their behaviors and how much just some attention and affection from adults impacted their behaviors was honestly amazing.…

I expressed this by keeping the students focused, letting them engage in hands on experiments, and answering all their questions to help them get a better understanding of what was happening. Lundmark et al. (2009)4 consider remanufacturing a “win-win-win” situation: “Customers can obtain remanufactured products cheaper, companies reduce their costs and they earn more and the environment benefits.” That said, remanufacturing can support all the three basic pillars of Sustainable Development (Environmental, Economic, Social).
