Personal Narrative: My First Surgery

My life started the same as anyones. I was made in a tube, put into a surrogate mother, and then was born. Babies repulse everyone, so most parents can’t even stand to keep their babies. That is, until the baby gets their first surgery. After that, the moms and dads beg the adoption center for their babies back and they all live happily ever after. I understand why people are like this though. We are surrounded by beautiful people day in and day out and when we see a baby, it reminds us that once we too were as ugly as disgusting, drooling monsters. I have had 17 surgeries, so I only have one more surgery until I am perfect like everyone else. My eyes are perfectly round, my nose has just the right perk, my mouth has soft large lips, and my cheekbones are high and prominent. One of my friends who got their 18th told me that after it, he felt as though everything fell into place and life made sense. I want that, and I have been patient to wait every year to get my newest surgery, but I’m tired of waiting. I don 't want to be ugly anymore. I want to look in the mirror before school and see everyone else in my face. Being …show more content…

All I wanted was to be left alone, so I could admire the amazing work our scientists have done to perfect my face. I stared at my own reflection, seeing my hair that was the right shade of blonde, parted just the right way. My eyes were blue with a hint of gold, just the same as everyone else 's. My face didn’t have a single blemish and never would. I was almost absolutely perfect. My sister, Aniline, waved a plastic magazine in my face. “Look at the newest face!” she squealed. I opened the magazine franticly and see that one of the most famous people today, Evelina Ross, had pushed the limits again with surgeries. In Nathaniel Hawthorne’s “The Birth-Mark” Aylmer’s faith in science and how he allows it to draw a wedge between himself and his wife, Georgiana, because he views her birth-mark as an imperfection and feels he can use science to remove it and create the perfect wife. Georgiana doesn’t view her birthmark as an imperfection and up until her marriage to Aylmer never considered removing it. In my opinion, Aylmer should not have married Georgiana if he could not accept her for who she was to begin with. In modern times, it is common for someone to undergo plastic surgery, like Georgiana’s, to alter their appearance because they assume they will be more comfortable with themselves after the surgery is complete.…

Cosmetic improvement is a good thing because it gives more self esteem to kids and other people who need it. The first reason that cosmetic improvement shouldn’t be terminated is because some kids get bullied about how they look and this cosmetic improvement could make that go away. Evidence to support this is that cosmetic improvement changes how you look and if you change how you look to make kids not bully you, wouldn’t that be worth it? Cosmetic improvement also can change how you feel on the inside. Looking good and getting compliments from other people can give your self-esteem a boost and ultimately can be good for the better.…

A traveler taps the side of the vehicle to board, pays, rides and then taps to jump off at a desired destination. For one particular man who sat with his face covered by a towel, that destination was the Diegue clinic in Port-au-Prince. All I knew from intake was that this patient was here for a foot issue. As social media has become more prevalent in the lives of the youth of the United States, beauty standards have drastically shifted and are more unrealistic than ever before. Young people no longer want to possess the characteristics that create an individual, but would rather conform to perfection through plastic surgery. Years ago, the realm of plastic surgery seemed to stay transfixed to Beverly Hills and Jersey Shore, but social media has caused numbers to skyrocket globally while preying on insecurity, and has now created an uncanny trend. As a result of these demands of goddess-like beauty, 98% of girls say there is an immense pressure from external sources to look a certain way (“Pressure & Perfectionism” n.p.). Confidence is no longer an internal battle, but through the effect of social media it has begun to affect the daily lives of younger generations.…

In November of 2010, I got my tonsils taken out, at eight years old. It really affected me because in the year of 2010 alone, I had already had strep throat about five or six times. It had been going on since we moved to Ohio, from Indiana in 2009, and it was just getting worse. My doctor was worried and we were sent to an ENT doctor, which stands for ears, nose and throat. When entering junior high, we were constantly reminded by teachers, parents, and school administrators how different it was from elementary school. It was supposed to be the start of a transition from childhood to young adulthood, and though I discounted many of these sentiments at the time, looking back it certainly was. In an instant, it seemed, everyone started swearing and the hallways began to smell of a putrid mixture of not enough or too much cologne. For the first time we had to change before gym, no one really sure whether it was more socially acceptable to change in a bathroom stall or feign confidence by doing it out in the open. Talk swirled of who got their periods, who was wearing what bra size, and which boys needed to stop cultivating…
