I would choose to live to be a hundred and one years old, and die surrounded by my friends and family through human euthanasia. In Chapter 2 of our textbook, Death and Dying, Life and Living, it is noted that the most common causes of death in our society are degenerative and cerebrovascular diseases, and accidents (particularly automobile related). The option of dying surrounded by loved ones with a hundred years of life to look back on is a much more comforting and desirable thought. In Chapter 3 of our textbook, death-related anxiety is a central theme, focusing on different fears and concerns most have about their own dying. This includes a long, difficult, painful death, in an unfamiliar institution cared for by strangers who might not respect one’s personal wishes. First and foremost, I wish to be cremated. Thanks to new technological advances, many opportunities have arisen for cremated remains. In association with the “Living Reef Memorial” foundation, I wish that my cremains be placed in an artificial reef and deployed on the ocean floor. These reefs assist in restoring ailing fish stocks, reduce species extinction rates, and enhance biodiversity. Growing up near the coast of Florida, the ocean and its creatures have always been one of my greatest loves, a love I plan to pass onto the next generation as well. The company also offers a viewing of the implantation of the artificial reef, and a plaque dedicating the reef to the deceased. I know that dedicating my remains in this way will positively benefit my loved ones and the environment. Instead of visiting a grave site, they will think of me whenever they see the ocean and all of its mysteriously beautiful
