My Therapist Experience

Describe the experience of being the therapist in the recorded role play.

My experience as the role play was vastly different than how I am with my clients where I volunteer at. Perhaps being the last one, which was not my choice, worn on me and I was not able to demonstrate my skills as much as I had hoped. Nevertheless, it was a great experience for me. I learned that perhaps my style fits more with the Bowen model than the narrative. Therefore, I will plan to be more observant in my daily interactions with my clients and ask my current supervisor what she has observed. I do however, truly enjoy narrative so I find myself torn.

Describe the competencies you have mastered.

Role Play Reflection The goal of this role play was to practice completing an assessment on a family, while using motivational interviewing. Since my group only had two people, our role play consisted of a social worker and a student, who was exhibiting behavioral problems in school. My clinical experience so far has been quite interesting, because I learned basic clinical procedures and preventions that I know will benefit me as a nurse in the near future. During lab, we discussed infection control, personal hygiene, and isolation precautions. These procedures impact my personal health and wellness, because I need to ensure that I am using the proper techniques in order to keep me safe. Also, I know that it is important to make sure my patients are not at risk of developing hospital associated infections.…

On Being a Therapist by Jeffrey Kottler is an educational piece of literature that also happens to be very informative and interesting. In the book, he discusses numerous aspects of being a therapist, ranging from how one decides to engage in this work, how therapists can change clients, how clients can change therapists, to the difficulties and struggles therapists frequently face. As someone who hopes to become a therapist someday, this book was a really incredible way of learning about the profession in a more subjective and ultimately real way. Not all he says is comforting, but his choice to discuss both the good, bad, and in between have given me a more thorough understanding of what I may experience in the future. Throughout this book, Kottler discusses many subjects that have connected…

I follow a therapist into a room, I stand primed ready for what is next on the agenda. I look up seeing a man with a massive scar on his arm. It traces over his shoulder and down his back to his shoulder blade. I look at him, he seem dazed, while the therapist calls his name getting increasingly louder. The man responds after a few seconds of silence, he opens his eyes a bit saying “I’m here, I’m here”.…

More recently, I began working for Restore therapy, LLC. as a (SLPA). When I began my position, I was initially ecstatic because this would be my first SLPA position, outside of my clinical experience, after stepping away from the CDIS graduate program. As exciting as this was, a few weeks into the position I felt overwhelmed with lesson plans, providing individual and group therapy, as well as writing individualized education plans (IEPs) for each student on my caseload. (But through perseverance and confidence), by adhering to the specific slots in my schedule reserved for consultation and the development of IEPs, I have become well-organized and efficient in my work.…

My grandparents introduced me to Occupational Therapy. My grandma, having been diagnosed with a rare neurological degenerative disease, had a stroke that impaired her fine motor skills. My grandpa, although I was not alive at the time, was diagnosed with Guillain-Barre in his 50s and was told he would be paralyzed at midlife. I watched OTs rehabilitate my grandma after her stroke so that she could complete important daily tasks again, like holding a pencil and writing with clarity. I was fascinated to see how small weekly advances turned into huge progressions in a month.…

The pressure that my brother and I had over the years in trying to keep my father’s dream of being successful alive was hard to deal with. It took patience and discipline to keep up with that expectation as we grew up. To be able to move on I had to endure the pressure and look at my real motivations for becoming a therapist. I had to pay attention to my feelings of wanting to prove myself. This is a tendency that while it has helped me in the past with the challenges that I have faced, it could hinder the work I do in counseling.…

Role Play Reflection Before doing the video, I became somewhat anxious at the thought of being on camera; knowing that I was going to be evaluated did not help my anxiety at all. After all, I am an introvert; even at that I love listening to people talk about their life’s experiences, and love to help them resolve their issues whenever possible. This is one reason I am looking forward to learning more about the social work field. I have always been careful at how much advice I offer a person; even more so now, after this class, because I recognize that if a worker is not prepared to help in the proper way she can do more harm than good to all the parties involved in the process. I am also aware that I am a social work student, and that my…

Thus far, I have learned many important aspects of becoming an effective therapist. One of the major parts of training involves evaluation and feedback from supervisors or peers. I think evaluations are an important part of training because it provides feedback to areas, which you are doing well in, and areas in which you will need improvement. I believe that without evaluations, we as therapist cannot grow into effective therapist. To date I cannot think of any job or career that does not use “end of the year evaluations”.…

I have never experienced therapy, but always had imagined how the process would be. I pictured a couch and a therapist on a fancy chair like in the movies, and I would just lay there and vent about my problems. Initially, I was very excited to see someone whom I can speak with and possibly help me resolve my issues, but that excitement did not last long. Anxiety kicked in as I got a phone call from the therapist, informing me that we would start next week. I started to become very nervous about the whole client-therapist relationship, for what if I did not connect with.…

My first clinical experience was at St. Vincent hospital on a geriatric unit, when I was a second year nursing student. During my time there, nurses often approached me to provide small learning experiences and teach students how to be efficient. When a nurse on the unit asked for help with a bed bath for a patient with whom I was not familiar, I agreed. I wanted to get as much experience as I could. The nurse led me to the patient 's room right away.…

It will help me to improve my professional practice, gain more knowledge and skills, and increase my critical thinking abilities and confidence in dealing with difficult situations.
