My Technological Literacy

Decent Essays
I have always been interested in electronics and technology in general. Growing up, whenever somebody in my family bought a new gadget or a computer, they would ask me to set it up for them. Although, I had no greater knowledge of those devices then my family members, it was mostly me who configured those gizmos. Looking back, it seems like everyone in my family assumed that I knew everything about technology, and most of the time I made it work. However, to tell the truth, pretty much all the problems I fixed were through trials and error. Furthermore, now that I really reflect upon my technological literacy; I think I am just starting to learn the basics. Just like the young people described in the article “fallacy of the digital native”,

(15). By making this argument Nichols paints the picture that almost any person could recognize today. The shift in culture to be dependent on electronics is profound. However, because the information on the internet is so vast much of it is simply a condescended version meant for consumers. This leads people to believe that they could learn anything from the internet.…

Therefore, it appears that this invalidates the argument that digitization (e – learning) is a curse on the basis that understanding is not formed in the 'real world’, as individuals will interpret their own reality. Perhaps technology has become the reality of many and we should stop viewing them both as two different worlds; ‘real’ and ‘unreal’. This argument is supported by Beeching (2013, Cameron’s cyber-bullying advice) who suggests that whether we are educated with or without technology, both forms are "equally real in their own way". Due to the digital revolution, technology surrounds our modern day-to-day lives. Following this, another element of the constructivist theory is particularly relevant here.…

We live in a word that is changing by the second, and it has been that way for the past twenty years. Technology has ultimately integrated itself into today's society, because of its necessity in the majority of American lives. Mark Bauerlein, the author of “The Dumbest Generation”, believes because of these advancements in technology, young Americans have lost the basic “intellectual habits” of the previous generation. However, social life is not the same as it was in the previous generation, effectively changing the way young Americans learn in today's era. The world is rapidly changing, and society’s expectations are following suit.…

    1. Technology have changed in multiple ways of how I communicate to other people, but the difference between myself and other generations, is that technology have always been available to me throughout my academic life so the opportunity to write professional letters in a formal mater barely comes up for me. But I have seen a huge difference between writing with a pen and pencil, and with technology. When writing with technology, I processes information much faster which causes me to write faster. The negative side of this is that it also increases the chance of mistakes and write less information needed for assignments.…

Many teenagers are awestruck with technology, and frequently turn to it before their own fathers. For Father’s Day, Gillette released an ad entitled “Go Ask Dad.” The video opened with a statistic: 94% of teenagers ask the Internet for advice before their dads. From there, the video showed different fathers speaking in various languages about their experiences as fathers. They said it was “a challenge,” that their kids get “lost in technology.”…

I remember the excitement over me as I sat anxiously on my seventh birthday waiting to peel open the presents that sat in front of me. My heart raced as I freed the last gift from its paper cover to find a gray Nintendo game boy, although already a dated piece of technology at the time, this gift was particularly special to me as it was a hammy down from my uncle and also the first gaming system that I owned. I was captivated by it and spent most of my days playing old games like Zelda or Scooby doo, but my captivation came more from the magic box that fit conveniently in my hands than the games on it. Since that day, ten years ago, I have been enthralled by technology and how it works, and as I grew I would constantly break down any piece…

It’s safe to say my parents are sick of watching Star Wars Episode II: The Clone Wars. Our family tradition of Saturday movie night is led by my brother and I, each choosing the designated movie every other week, usually that one. We would play the film on a computer while eating ice cream kept cold by the freezer in our house and previously Safeway. Two hours later, my brother and I would trudge off to bed and turn on the AC in the summer or the heater in the winter. Everything that I did, touched, and saw was linked to technology, especially growing up in the 2000’s when the digital age was picking up.…

Considering I have been a university student on and off for the last decade, I believe I have become complacent about my academic literacy skills. I earn good grades, in my opinion, and I often receive positive feedback on my academic writing style and my referencing. Whilst I have received some criticisms, it has never occurred to me to analyse my academic literacy skills and make a point of identifying my weaknesses and improving upon them. As my degree progresses, I increasingly need to be able to express myself confidently and clearly and I cannot do that sufficiently until I have refined my writing skills (Grellier & Goerke, 2014, p. 159). Using online proofreading tools was a useful way for me to identify the deficits in my writing style…

Being a child and seeing something so impressive as genuine enthusiasm can leave a profound influence on one’s life. Not bogged down with the depressions and calendric challenges of adulthood, the child is already open to the joys of experiencing the world through the clearest of lenses. This lens, unfortunate to its holder, becoming paradoxically narrower and murkier through experience, results in the warmest, loveliest moments of life emerging right upon the precipice of understanding. Such that when noticing an adult from a child’s perspective, absorbed in an experience, you yourself as that child in a sort of transcendental way, become that adult; experiencing through their eyes that same emotional composite that you felt when grasping, seeing, being in that transitory moment of play before the experience lost its allure through the burden of understanding.…
