Edward Jonas’ Legacy Fountain (fig. 1), represents the transition of Florida State College for Women to the college we know is as today Florida State University. With six statues in total in the fountain Jonas’ shows this transition by incorporating a wall of water between the two halves of the fountain. I believe this fountain was built to commemorate this transition and be a main focal point of Landis Green and the university as it was a huge moment in Florida State Universities history. When looking at the fountain it is clear there is a reason for the splitting of the six statues by a wall of water.…

Thus, it is vital to always consider who or what is being revered in a monument, and in doing so, what message is being sent. Oftentimes, memorials and statues display very limited excerpts of history. The well-known "discoverer of America", Christopher Columbus, is a prime example. Source B (Photo) shows a statue of Columbus in Riverside Park, Pennsylvania, but the explorer never actually set foot in North America. What's more, in invading Central and South America, he widely spread disease and directly caused the death of some 90% of the indigenous population.…

The monument I would create is in Boston, Massachusetts, which is a historically rich city, but I would create a monument to one specific event named the Boston Massacre. This is a significant event in the history of United States, where British troops murdered some Americans after they formed a mob. This partly led up to the Revolutionary War where America fought Britain. This monument would be made of dolomitic marble. It would contain a 20 x 20 replication of Paul Revere’s engraving of the Boston Massacre, and under it an inscription explaining the Boston Massacre.…

I am not converting to Buddhism, but I am really enjoyed learning a new perspective on life. I can apply some of the teachings to my life; such as, focusing on my breath and finding peace with myself. I think this is important because it can be easy to get lost when trying to juggle school, sports, and a social life as teenager. It is crucial to set time aside for yourself to relax. I really did not expect to enjoy my trip to a Buddhist temple to this magnitude.…

For instance, if a memorial is being built to pay homage to those who fought and sacrificed their lives in a war, the shrine would most likely be a wall or two of every individual's name involved in the war. Having only the names on the monument will allow everyone to respond and remember in their own way whether it be through a vivid picture or a slight memory of that person (Lin). But if a memorial is not paying any homage to those who have sacrificed, then the monument should be a still statue. A former student at Yale University strongly feels that all memorials should strictly just include names as they are more realistic and specific and much more comprehensive than a still photograph that not every can connect to (Lin). In contrary to Lin's thoughts, since every person involved in the event will be on the memorial it will be hard for people to find the person that he or she personally knows.…
