Me being 18 and just starting college I finally see how the world really is, it’s as if a cup of hot water had been thrown in my direction randomly, in other words I wasn’t ready. High school was a cake walk for everyone including myself simply because there wasn’t a huge amount of money over your head after you got your diploma. Just the thought of having a debt makes me cringe and it pushes me to use the time and the opportunity I have much smarter. College is one big investment in yourself and it makes me believe that I can accomplish more than I thought I could just a few months ago.…

The purpose of college for some people might be to get a degree and move on into the next chapter in life, but I feel that college should be more than that. I feel that college should be a way to express yourself in ways you couldn’t before and to be able to explore new ideas and to shape yourself to become someone new. I am a first generation student reared in a community where attending college was advocated, but for many persons it was a dream. Generations before me had this desire. However, it can be difficult to materialize dreams, hopes, and aspirations when we perceive our circumstances are stronger than our desires. It is easy for individuals accustomed to adversity to become hopeless, and this generalization poses some validity because I was one of those individuals. As the poverty cycle continued to perpetuate in my community, my desire to achieve became stronger.…

Centuries ago, only the wealthy Whites could attend college, leaving dedicated, knowledge-seeking individuals with unfulfilled dreams, simply because of social status.
