A Narrative Essay About My Identity

Improved Essays
Who am I? This question is hard for me to answer. I have been struggling with my identity for quite some time. It is a question that has haunted me now more than ever, seeing how I decided to step away from the military and begin my new journey as a student. I believe our past shapes our future, but does not dictate who we are or what we will become. In addition, it is important to understand your family’s history to appreciate everything that is in your life today.
Not only do I struggle with my identity, it is also hard for me to explain my family’s history. I have a relatively small family that does not extend out past my immediate family, which consist of my brother, and my mother. My father was apart of my life until I was ten years old.

She was an only child. She has lived her entire life in the city of Barberton. At the age of eighteen, she was hired in at Akron Children’s Hospital as a cook. Thirty-seven years later, my mother is now the head of the catering department at the hospital. My childhood was tough growing up without a father around. My brother would take care of me while my mom would work, he would ensure I made it to school and cooked for me. Even though my mother played both roles as a single parent, we still celebrated all the American holidays, but we did not ever practice religion within those holidays. My family’s heritage or ethnicity has never really played a role with my family. My mother being from Italian heritage did cook more Italian food, but I feel as if I was raised with the typical American lifestyle. Just like my mother, I had spent most of my life in the city of Barberton. Until I was nineteen years old I had never lived anywhere else. Than I joined the military, where I have now traveled the World. In my experience in the military I have also made a new family, my military family. Even though I am now a veteran and currently not serving, these people play important role in my life. Between my immediate family and my military family I am thankful for all the wonderful people in my life
