Reflection On Emotional Intelligent Leadership

Improved Essays
This quarter has been truly unforgettable. There have been both countless hardships and happy moments that I have been able to learn from. This paper will include my strongest and weakest Emotional Intelligent Leadership capacities, the experiences that have molded me in my past and present, and how Emotionally Intelligent Leadership will help my future development as a leader. My strongest capacities were Authenticity, Achievement, and Displaying Empathy. My weakest capacities are Emotional Self-Perception and Emotional Self-Control. Before Leadership 420, I was aware of my strengths and weaknesses but I was able to better understand them in this class because of the activities and reflections that we did throughout the quarter. “Emotional Self-Perception is about describing, naming, and understanding your emotions.” (Shankman & Allen, 34). This has been something that I have been working at my entire life. I remember the class that Saranda taught started with each one of us telling the class how we were feeling. The great thing about this was that it was describing your mood with weather. This made me think about all the things that I had been going through and I realized that it was going to be okay. Since I have been reflecting on this capacity for weeks, I have realized that the first step that I must take is to take more time to love myself. Just this last week I decided to take time to pamper myself and go shopping alone and it felt so good to do something for me and only me. Once I love myself in a healthy way, I think that understanding my emotions will …show more content…
Every day I am learning new things about myself and I believe that these capacities have helped me put a lot of things into perspective. Understanding that I have Authenticity, Achievement, and Displaying Empathy as my strengths has made me more aware of how often that I use them. I believe that knowing that these capacities have helped me be a better leader lets me know that I should use these to my advantage. These capacities fit well with my aspirations of wanting to be a youth advocate. To be a youth advocate you must be transparent and trustworthy because you will be around youth who need to know the truth, but also because their parents are trusting you to take care of their children. You must also want to set high standards for these youth because most of them are coming from broken households and tough lives and need that person to push them to their highest potential. Finally, it is critical to display empathy to these young kids. Putting yourself in their shoes and trying to understand what they go through will help you get a glimpse of their lives. These all are valuable tools to use in my future calling because they will make all of these young children more successful. As for my lowest Emotionally Intelligent Leadership capacities, those could definitely affect my future in youth advocacy. Not being able to understand or manage your emotions when you

But we are also given a lot of freedom about how we go about doing this. This is reassuring because it also shows us that they support our decisions about trying new ways to help these students grow. The first area that I need to work on is pointing others to Jesus. This leadership essential is definitely an area where I need to grow mainly because I have not really worked on it.…

Partaking in the student council organization has allowed for personal and leadership growth, and is comprised of plentiful downfalls and successes. But I believe that it requires missteps and prosperity to learn and grow as a leader. In terms of strength, my skills in proper and adequate delegation tasks have contributed to the successes of my class. However, delegating and simply telling others what to do is not leadership, it is the act of collaborating with one another to execute an event or achieve the goal. Ultimately, I believe that it is my ability to uplift and empower others as my greatest asset.…

My heart is beating quickly, my mouth is dry, and as I look at the familiar faces in front of me, their judging eyes make them seem like strangers. I struggle to get them to quiet down and we begin our hour long sectional, which I have to lead. It was the first day of my third year in marching band and at the end of last year, with the graduation of the previous section leader, I was granted his important position. Being a competitive person, I was extremely self conscience of how my section made me look. I hated being blamed for their errors and was exceedingly harsh towards them during sectionals.…

Emotional Intelligence is another topic I had heard of but not explored at any depth before this leadership class. Leadership requires the support and vision of the organization and creativity. A strong leader should have a high Emotional Intelligence (EI) factor for the staff to want to follow with his/her vision. If the culture is not where it needs to be leadership should first model the behaviors they wish to institute and then reinforce that behavior in others when observed. (Gokenbach,…

35). There are three skills associated with leading and influencing, including the ability to identify, analyze, and resolve situations that arise, adapt to situations as appropriate, and communicate with others in a manner that promotes understanding and acceptance (Huber, 2014, p. 4). Collectively, these abilities are determined by one’s level of emotional intelligence. A high level of emotional intelligence is demonstrated by a high degree of self-awareness, self-management, intuition, and an ability to form effective interpersonal relationships (Huber, 2014). Additionally, it is important for leaders to recognize their own weaknesses, so that they are able to follow when someone else is the better leader.…

Reflection #5 This week’s reading in, “Emotionally Intelligent Leadership,” was all about inspiration and being a good leader through inspiring others. This, personally, is an area where I have a lot of experience. When I was in high school I was the captain of my lacrosse year from sophomore to senior year. During this time of being captain I grew as a leader and learned many things about inspiring others. The main thing I learned, which the book also touched on a little bit, was that to effectively inspire others it is important to grow a relationship with them first and foremost.…

but also to have them apply their skills in real life to an issue that they feel passionately about, be that speaking on self help topics, organizing fundraisers for charities, or something else of similar importance. In today’s world, advocacy is nothing new, but I think it’s important to learn how to not only voice your opinion on issues but also how to break out of that passive advocacy and become someone who not only believes in something, but also someone who does something about what they believe. One of my first experiences with finally becoming an “active advocate” was when I became involved in the Seeds of Hope Summer Camp, a two week long summer program and year long mentor program that works with at-risk youths who come from abusive homes, the foster system, and a variety of other difficult situations. I have been the lead counselor for the eldest group of kids (all of whom are middle school aged) for two years now, and it’s been a transformative experience for me because I’m finally having the opportunity to see the issues I’ve always heard about in person, and subsequently I’m…

In my four readings that I had this week, I learned many new things about how important it is to be a leader who is capable of working efficiently with others. Being able to work with others and form networks is very important when it comes to the real world. It defines what kind of leader you are and how efficiently you can achieve your goals. In the book, Emotionally Intelligent Leadership, the author discusses that to be a leader you must be able collaborate, and effectively work with others (Shankman).…

My leadership philosophy is one that is rooted in the strong belief that it must be a continuous quest to motivate all students to become critical thinkers, effective communicators, and lifelong learners, while possessing outstanding character. This includes assisting students with discovering their talents and interests, therefore developing a love of learning, while developing into ethical, productive citizens. Accomplishing this requires a leader who is knowledgeable in pedagogy and curriculum, including the use of data and current assessments to enhance instruction, and who possesses outstanding communication skills, the ability to manage an operation’s resources effectively, promotes collaboration and teamwork, and is passionate and committed to helping students learn. I believe that my interpersonal skills will be my biggest strength as an educational leader. Through frequent, honest communication, and my enthusiasm for the subject, I will demonstrate understanding and compassion for those around me, therefore building trusting relationships.…
