Essay On My Weakness In English

During my time in English 1A I was able to see some of my strength and weaknesses in my writing and reading as well; I also learned how to use them to make me a stronger reader and writer. I learned new things that will help me in my English classes and also some of my other future classes. During our English 125 class we sped through the class since it was compacted into six weeks so this class went over lots of those things I was not able to understand before. With explanations, assignments, and some of the handouts we received throughout the semester helped me grow as a writer, reader and even as a thinker.

I found doing this was very helpful. I was able to look up articles and describe how I can use them to make my argument stronger. It was something so simple but just by having all the articles with a description on one paper made it so much easier to reference them and look at why I should use that article in my essay. This, along with completing a prospectus was very helpful to me while completing my essay. The prospectus talked about what the purpose of our paper was going to be and why it was an issue in the first place. These definitely helped me in the process of writing my essays and will help me in future essays. I also came to the conclusion that I enjoyed writing argumentative essays. I found that when I was working on this essay, it was fun. I scored the highest in this essay with a 44/50. I am hoping after this portfolio it can go up a point or two for an A. I did some minor corrections throughout my essay along with the MLA corrections before turning it in for the final time. Another thing I enjoyed was the topic and tentative thesis worksheet for our third essay. We wrote down the quotes that we were going to use in our essay and why we were going to use it. These little assignments will help me in future classes as

My experience to English 1101 was totally different from my high school English class, but it was also a good learning experience. Making the transition from high school was a lot different because of the fact that college you only have the class for a semester and in high school you have the same teacher all year. I learned a few things last year in English 1101 that I didn't know. I learned how to do a film analysis on the movie The Village and how the colors from the movie had a meaning behind them. We also learned from the movie how the position of the camera means something.…

Argumentative Essay Ben Franklin once wrote, “Well done is better than well said.” In simpler terms, Franklin is stating that actions are better than words. While actions and words are both elements that can be manipulated to fit a given situation, one is usually more efficient in solving problems, defining character, and accomplishing goals. In the novels Unbroken and Maus, the actions of the characters prove to be the most vital asset in their survival by helping them overcome obstacles and giving their lives meaning and purpose. On the other hand, The Scarlet Letter illustrates that being unable to transform words into actions makes one emotionally and mentally weaker.…

Coming into English 101, I really did not know what to expect. This was my first college writing class so I had no idea what it was going to be like. In high school I would have considered myself to be a decent writer, not the best or not the worst. I would never impress anyone with my writing skills but I could still come across as educated on my topic.…

I wrote one “source-based argumentative essay” in high school: my final essay from sophomore English. The guidelines were to write a four to eight page paper on any topic of your choice, but the thesis of the paper had to come across clearly. At the time, my personal goals were to write about something no one else would, as well as get an A in the class. As a future collegiate writer, I feel as though I have the habits and potential strengths to be successful, but my biggest weakness is that I do not know how to write a professional essay and I am a reluctant editor.…

Do the English that is spoken at home while growing up have any effect on how well you performed in school or around your community? I grew up in Los Angeles, CA in a low-income area that was infested with a lot of gang activities, criminal activities, and drug related activities. Growing up in this type of environment I was accustomed to speaking improper English also know as slang. Talking and writing improper English was common for me in an everyday situation for example when communicating with friends even family members I would open up with what's up instead of answering with hello how are you doing. Throughout high school improper English would transition into my schoolwork, instead of writing I am, I would've wrote I is.…

English composition was never my strong nor favorite because of my knowledge of the grammar and organization in my writing. Taking English 101 is a jump start for me, because last year of high school my teacher focused primarily on English literature. The course has introduced me to rhetorical analysis, and swatching (imitating author argument). Throughout the semester and all of the papers written I can say that it was a good experience to write at a college level and the expectation from college professors is good for future courses that involve writing essays.…

At the beginning of the semester, I viewed myself as a creative writer. After attending this class I realized that there is a lot more that goes into writing an essay, or a research paper, than just creativity alone. I have learned that it is very important to be aware of my strengths and weaknesses in my writing. Taking this class has helped me understand the strengths and weaknesses in my writing skills, and it has given me the opportunity to strengthen the areas in which I was weak. An example of this is that I have become aware of my grammar and spelling errors as the semester progressed.…

In this essay I used strong paragraph transitions and also great flow when I eased on to the next elements of my paper (“A Helpful Hand”). I felt that this essay, coming as my last contained the multiple improvements that I have learned all year. Giving me a great chance to finish off with a strong essay. English 101 taught me how to be more creative and broad about writing. Example on Essay 1 I didn’t really mention anything about Sonia Sotomayor’s mother not wanting her to work, and behind that was facts and important information about he context that I missed. I also approach my assignments differently now; I make sure my paragraphs are structured in the write order for an easy read for the reader. I realized when I start off with a good approach on a topic I have to tools and skills learned in class to expand ideas and write a solid piece of writing to read. I did also realize that I am bad to start off with, I haven’t seemed to find that spark to start me off right, so I guess that’s why they call it a shitty first…

This English class has been very helpful in my efforts to improve my writing abilities, but has also been very challenging due to there being a different median for every essay. It’s been a heavy work load especially this semester since I decided to enroll in five classes, but in the end it has been very beneficial indeed. I can’t say that writing essays has been one of my strong points but I believe that this course has helped me improve tremendously and it has also made me feel a lot more comfortable with my writing. While in high school I would usually write all of my essays a day before the due date a habit of mine that was very difficult to overcome, but now I have learned from my mistakes.…
