Reflection On My Strengths And Weaknesses

Superior Essays
Writing has always been quite the task for me, and never a very enjoyable one at that. Up until college the only scholarly writing I was exposed to was in high school, and even that I would have considered as mediocre. For me, English classes were an easy A+ and so I never took writing that seriously. As a writer I have my strengths and weaknesses, but I do not feel as confident in my strengths as I do my weaknesses. I think I am good with grammar and mechanics, but when it comes to time management or organization then forget it. I usually struggled with writing projects in high school, mostly due to my lack of interest and my great ability to avoid writing assignments until the very last minute. Time management is the first thing that pops into my head. I am terrible at managing the time it takes for me finish a writing assignment. Usually larger writing assignments, such as research papers and essays with minimum page limits, were given a longer timeframe to be completed. In the mind of my high school self, a due date two weeks away meant that I did not have to start working on the assignment for about another week or so. This left me up all night the night before trying to put together some acceptable piece of writing. If I had managed my time better, I am sure the end result would have been better as well.
One of my biggest weaknesses will always be the dreaded thesis. From English class to AP U.S. History, I have been taught so many different ways to write a thesis that now I am just downright overwhelmed by the word thesis itself. Even for this paper I have changed my thesis so many times hoping to make it perfect but not knowing what perfect is even supposed to look like. Writing a well constructed thesis will be on the top of my list of skills to improve

The project required me to research a well-known person from a provided list of people whom were considered to have heroic qualities. I then had to write a speech as if I were that particular person that highlighted why they were a hero. I picked Bob Marley because I was interested in learning what made him a hero. It did not take long for me to become intrigued by the information that I found about him, which helped me write an effective hero speech that received an almost perfect grade. I believe my success with this project can be most related to my great interest in the

After reading a few chapters of Strengths Quest, I was instructed to participate in the Strengths Finder assessment (Anderson, Clifton, & Schreiner, 2006). This 30 minute assessment was an interesting tool that pointed out my greatest strengths. It also provided a detailed description of what having those strengths mean and examples of how they are prominent in a person 's life. After taking the StrengthsFinder survey, I discovered that my five dominant strengths are empathy, harmony, consistency, relator, and restorative.…

My essays have improve over the semester, because now I know what mistakes I should be aware of committing. Also because I was able too look back in my whole process and argumentative essay and noticed the insufficient amount of detail and support I was providing. As a writer I feel that I need to focus in writing strong thesis statements that are going to capture the readers attention. I also need to pay more attention when it comes to developing an essay because I tend to leave out important information that’s going to make my essay…

Writing would never be called my passion; however, if the topic of interest is thought-provoking, writing can be pleasurable. I have always been exceedingly critical of my writing, and I have a bad habit of producing your standard “five paragraph with five sentences” essay. High school was the true test of my writing skills, mainly because I had to take the ACT and SAT with writing if I wanted to get into the only Georgia school that I thought was up to par with my standards: The University of Georgia. Even though my teachers have considered me to be an acceptable writer, I have always considered myself rather subpar. This insecurity about my writing has haunted me throughout my life, and I have this feeling towards writing mainly…

Then finally my analysis was finished. The largest challenge I overcame in this part was definitely the revision, because that took a lot of time and hard work to complete. I would say using the writing process helped some, more so in the beginning stages of the writing process when I was coming up with my ideas and starting my…

Adequate writing was always a struggle for me because I struggled with coming up with topics to write about. Even when teachers gave us prompts to write about I struggled writing about them mostly because I thought writing was boring. Another reason I was discouraged by writing was I would spend hours at a time trying to come up with ideas for a prompt and would barely come up with any ideas to write about. Being a civil engineering major I see why writing is so important in my career field. My experience with writing has had its good moments and its bad moments.…

Going through elementary school reading was always a struggle for me. It was challenging for me to fully comprehend what we were doing and reading in the class. Every friday I would go to see a teacher one on one to practice reading it involved being timed and having to tell her everything I had just read so that it would build up my comprehension. I remember feeling very embarrassed to be pulled out of class for extra help. Going through that didn't help that much, I was missing class…

I have always considered my relationship with writing to be very insignificant. Although I enjoy spending time verbally expressing my thoughts and feelings to others, it becomes difficult when these thoughts and feelings are expressed through writing. Throughout my adolescent years, I would often receive feedback for my writing given by the teacher in the form of a grade. Being unable to effectively organize my thoughts and ideas into words and sentences, I would feel reluctant to continue writing confidently whenever I received an undesirable grade.…

To me, writing has always been busy work and something that teachers only used to create grades. My writing experience in high school was very limited to one category in: practice AP essays. The writing I did in class was always preparing for AP exams and was very fact based. Most essays, such as history, were only used to show that I knew the material and weren’t graded on how good the writing was. I didn’t feel like I had any freedom to stray away from the format that the AP graders expected because I didn’t want that to affect my score.…

If you were to ask me about my high school writing experience, I would tell you that I did not have much experience. We did not have any classes at my school that were specifically writing classes. At my high school, we just had regular English classes where we would occasionally do a few papers in. My English teacher senior year was a great person, but did not necessarily teach us a lot about proper styles of writing papers. Coming into college English, I did not feel well prepared with what to expect for a college level writing class.…

Since I have been complaining that I can’t write a lot, but I know how to incorporate a quote into my sentence; that usually helps me to expand my paragraphs because I knew that after incorporating a quote, I would have to explain it.
