A peer mentor is defined as a person who uses their resources to support, encourage and inform someone. Going into this semester, I was unaware that I would be mentoring another student and thus doubted my abilities. Although I was excited to become a mentor, I questioned whether I would truly be able to make a difference in someone’s life. The difference that I wanted to make could be as simple as helping someone ace a test, but the news of mentoring threw me off track. Nonetheless, I gathered myself and tried to maintain a positive attitude. After the completion of this semester, I can say that I enjoyed every moment of my experience simply because it provided me with mutual feedback. Throughout the semester, I was able to learn about my

One thing that I learned about myself is that I tend to pre-judge someone before actually meeting them or having a relationship with them. It is something that we all do and it can turn into a bad habit. Ryan’s disability does not define who he is. He is no different than any other person on this campus. We all are here for the same purpose, to learn. I feel that that is something I would want to change, not only with myself, but with the people around me. Previously, my friends and I would joke about people and how they differ from us. Having a relationship with Ryan opened my eyes greatly. So much so, that I would get angry at my friends for talking in such a hurtful way and recommend that they not speak in that manner. I never realized how cruel our conversations where until I stepped out the circle and looked from a different perspective. In similar fashion, these past few months has helped me identify my procrastination dilemma. Through trial and error, I was able to come up with a system to lessen the amount of time it took me to complete assignments. On a more positive note, the mentoring experience this semester also helped me identify my strengths. In time, I was able to display my leadership characteristics and really focused on making sure our interactions were interesting and productive. I also realized that positivity and enthusiasm are great to understand a different point of view; as negative thoughts, will only lead to a negative
