My Strengths And Weaknesses Essay

As a leader is it important to know and own up to your strengths and weaknesses. Armed with this information one can build up their strengths and work towards eliminating their weaknesses. For myself, I asked friends to verify what my strengths and weaknesses are. This is what we agreed upon: my strengths include being personable and friendly, and a good listener; for my weaknesses I do not know when to say no, and my use of sarcasm may offend people who do not know me well. There are a few things that I can do to learn to say no, and to reduce my sarcasm when it comes to new people. After a few hours of her rambling and talking she turned to me and said, “Nat, you’re a really good listener. You’re not always interrupting me and talking about your problems.” Since then I started noticing that people would open up to me fairly quickly and tell me things, I have one such friend who would call me every day if I let him to talk about his problems and just have me listen. The problem with not saying no to people is that it gives them idea that I am willing to fix and do everything they ask of me. As a leader is it important for the development of followers to push them to take responsibility for what they have done, whether it is good or bad (Hackman and Johnson, 2013). This idea is called “developing ownership”, the basics of this idea is that the leader should not take the follower’s problems off their hands, they should let the follower make mistakes and learn from that experience (Hackman & Johnson, 2013, pg. 157). A personal example of this is doing favors for a girl from my hometown who has proven time and time again that she does not like me and does not appreciate the things I have done. She went on a car trip with me that was a total of 16 hours, and never offered to pay for gas once and the only time she said thank you was when the trip was over and she was about to leave my house to go home.
