While working on a unit like CVC-5, the patient’s plan is constantly changing and it is important to stay on top of orders. Using judgment when it comes to the patient’s care, such as holding medications that are contraindicated has been an area that I have seen the immense person growth. I use my critical thinking skills to evaluate outcomes and findings. This is helpful when patients present with more complex conditions and long past medical histories. Open-mindedness is an area that I find very helpful in this profession. I am open to different and unique ways to solve problems. For example, I had a patient with severe scrotal edema that needed to be elevated. My nurse and myself found the soft restraints to tie around the back of his neck to elevate his scrotum. Having an open mind is very useful in nursing because patients come from home with their own ways of solving their problems, and it is important to listen to what they say. This research extends to nursing students, and finding their specific strengths and skills. In a study by Cederbaum and Klusaritz, they recommend using the nursing students strengths to help them grow their nursing practice and career. They identify nursing students having a better outcome and higher levels of satisfaction when their instructors “emphasize discovering, affirming, and enhancing the capabilities, interests, knowledge, resources, goals, and objectives of individuals”.
