My strategy is called PACE. Preview, Ask questions while reading (Bloom’s taxonomy style questions), column notes, and finally Elaborate the notes. Throughout my time in LTRE 190 I picked up on a few good strategies that I was good at and a few that I did not do so well on. Through that process I learned how I actually learn and how to become better at learning. My strategy device consist of strategies that worked well for me so I combined them. When a student uses PACE they are constantly active. First, the student will preview any piece of text, I always believe it is a good thing to test the waters before deciding to jump head first. Second, while the student is previewing the text they will write a minimum of five questions that they will …show more content…
I developed some ideas and concepts from Cornell notes, Bloom’s Taxonomy, and from the test preparation questions and answers. I found a unique way of being all those strategies together and create one ultimate strategy that would help me and other students in the future. I got the idea of having my important terms, words, phrases, people, and events and their elaboration on two different sides from Cornell style notes. I got the idea of asking higher level questions from Bloom’s taxonomy because while I worked with that strategy I felt that I understood more and by asking higher level questions, I was able to understand more concepts and I personally felt that I was actually learning. I choose to use this strategy main on Biology because I feel that biology is one of those tougher classes to pass because there is just too many concepts and terms that need to be comprehend, rehearsed, and used over again. I feel that my strategy is perfect for that. It hits all three essential factors of learning. Although PACE can be used for more than just Biology, it can be used for Psychology, English, History, Economics, and any other major courses that require the student to comprehend a dense and lengthy amount of text. Students should use PACE and make use to pace themselves and actually learn

During the second semester of my junior in high school, I collaborated with two other biology students to study for our International Baccalaureate exams in May. I am not trying to say that my teacher was a terrible teacher but the teacher was retiring the following year and did not worry too much about our success in the exams. My two classmates and I decided to form a study group. We each would study and try our hardest to understand particular chapters and then share the chapters with the other two. By going this route, we were able to maximize our knowledge intake on the year and a half biology syllabus which we did not have time for.…

The general argument made by Annie Murphy Paul in her work, Smart Strategies That Help Students Learn How to Learn, is that students and teachers should merely focusing on teaching more cognitive and metacognitive learning strategies instead of focusing on content. BIO 1114 taught me to believe in my ability to work hard in order to conquer any information that was put in my way. In order to overcome this challenge (which represents most challenges I had when dealing with hard classes) I had to do three main things. First figure…

In regards to my writing process, there have been some central strategies that I have developed over time and some strategies that I have had for as long as I can remember. For example, one skill that I have developed from high school has been to annotate, mark up, and take notes throughout my readings. I found that taking notes really helps me, not only to remember what I read but to go back and be able to point out something in my reading easily. In addition, it helped me understand the readings better.…

My personal learning style is kinesthetic. I like to have a feel for the particular assignment. For example, when I was in elementary school, I remember one of my teacher was explaining math and for some reason I was not getting it. Stages on starting the game of baseball Henry Ford ‘Whether you think you can or you can't, you're right.' This is true of most things in life, including how we learn. If we believe we can learn and we understand how learning takes place, according to Dr. Rita Smilksteins research, we can learn anything we set are minds to. The six strategies of learning are; Motivation/ (watch, have to, shown, and interest), start to practice (practice, trail, and error and ask question), Advanced practice (lesson, practice, read, and confidence), Skillfulness (some success, enjoyment, and sharing), Refinement (improvement, natural, pleasure, and creative) and Mastery (teach, and higher challenges).…

This specific history class has advanced my ability to learn and think differently compared to my cognitive and learning kills prior to the course at Richland College through the numerous ways the professor teaches the class. As this semester was my first college experience, I wasn’t sure what to expect as far as how to study and for how long, how I should take notes during class, how long I should study for tests, and even how I should study for tests. Yet I found that the course wasn’t difficult at all because the professor set up the class so that students knew how to take notes and how to study and how to prepare themselves for tests. In the class, the professor taught using Microsoft PowerPoint, but he expanded the lessons beyond the program.…

Metacognition is a term used to define how well a student is aware of their own understanding of a concept or topic. This is essential for nursing school as it allows students to understand and identify their strengths and weaknesses and how to overcome any weakness that may be present. Students who are overly confident in the material they have studied, often have lower test scores and a weaker understanding of a topic as they feel that reviewing or changing a study habit is unnecessary (Chew, 2011). Metacognition relates to my personal learning and study habits in that I often do not study as in depth as required, and am too confident in how much I have studied. This has resulted in exam grades that were not what I had anticipated and need…

As a person I have been a diabetic ever since the age of three. However, I have been able to manage both my diabetes and my education and have been proud of this. Even though I am diabetic, I like people to view me as myself rather than my disease because my personality gives off who I am, not the diabetes. I enjoy taking on challenges as it leaves a learning experience for me and benefitting from it. As a person, I enjoy doing community service as it makes me feel involved that I am helping my community rather than being the person who just goes to school for their education and not to do anything else.…
