My Stereotypes

I have a tendency to have miniscule biases when trying to find preferred traits in other individuals. This is a result of me growing up in Brooks Alberta; which is known for being a very culturally diverse city. Diversity can be largely seen throughout my friend groups; however, most my friends last year were predominantly male, the same age or slightly older, heterosexual, catholic, and middle-class citizens. My friend group was largely shaped due to the fact that I went to a catholic school from kindergarten till grade 12. I also grew up being more of a tomboy, hence why my friend group was primarily males. After joining Lethbridge College, however, I found myself to be surrounded by a primarily females, of a similar age, and having similar goals and values in life. I feel that the maturity level has also improved since moving cities and as a result, has drastically changed my preference in qualities that I look for in a friend.

Growing up I had a lot of African American, Honduran, and Filipino friends; as a result, when an individual talks negatively towards someone else based off the other individual’s race it upsets me and can make me temporarily or indefinitely dislike the person. However, I’m a bit hypocritical as I have a slight bias towards the aboriginal community. I have a tendency to be less trusting of the native population, unless I know the personally know the individual. This is a result of only ever experiencing First Nation individuals who were drug addicts and alcoholics that lived in my hometown Brooks. I have also almost been attacked by an intoxicated native man while I lived in Calgary, when he ran into me on the street, so I said sorry to avoid conflict

The students had a preconceived idea about the Harvard students being snobby and the Law students thought the students would not take the task seriously. This chapter really hit on many stereotypes throughout the chapter and how powerful it can be when stereotypes are broken. I would never think to take my class on a field trip to a courthouse to participate in a mock trial.…

I go with a group who share my passion for the outdoors. However, they are all caucasian and their parents are still together. I greatly enjoy my time spent up in Canada with these individuals but sometimes I feel as though they don't completely understand my life. They don't understand it snows in New Mexico, or that I live at the end of the rocky mountains. They don't understand that my family didn't immigrate across the border or that I lead a fairly similar life to them.…

Each of these sources relates to my research question of, “Are stereotypes in America raging out of control?” The first source helps me relate to my question because the content it contains is about how Muslims are stereotyped. Showing how during the time of the War on Terror that America was on red alert about this particular religion. So for years after this incident they have been constantly stereotyped by Americans and maybe even the world. Now my second source is about the gender stereotypes of women trying to work through the barrier of having a job and raising a family.…

Television’s role in Americans’ lives has grown since its invention. Many people tune in to television for entertainment and information, be it something as trivial as weather forecast or something as big as a terrorist attack. In many cases, what people see on the television programs becomes their perceived reality. With that being said, it is comprehensible for some people to unknowingly accept the stereotypes about minorities, such as Asian-Americans, that are promoted by television, thus expecting certain behaviors from individuals of these groups. But what effects do stereotypes have on Asian-Americans in the United States?…

When we are introduced to the novel and all of its unique characters, there is one aspect that is kept purposefully in the dark. The audience is told early on in the novel that this story takes place in an unnamed American city. Without knowing where this story is placed, our minds are kept clear as readers and observers. Humans are natural creatures of bias, using previous knowledge and some old biases to base our thoughts and opinions, especially when information is not provided. Though this is not true for everyone, knowing the location of the area for some would cause some people to fill their minds with subconscious stereotypes and prejudice.…

My values, beliefs, morals and cultural views have been shaped over my life by many things. Personal influences such as friends, family, social media and the news media have been the most influential in shaping my attitudes and beliefs when it came to Aboriginal and Toress Strait Islanders. However, as I entered adulthood and found myself in amongst new circles of friends, work colleagues and a new career my views and opinions began to change. Growing up my close family members were not very open minded to other cultures, religions or nationalities. We were taught at an early age that Aboriginal and Toress Strait Islanders were dangerous, that we should avoid making friends with them, that we would only see ourselves getting into trouble should be choosing to associate with them.…

A true sense of shared history can only come when all the evidence from this time period is factual, objective and un-biased. It is also critical that the two parties involved in the ‘shared-sense’ of history are open-minded and that there is no information asymmetry between them. Saying this, Australia is in a unique perspective to acknowledge its ‘shared sense of history’. The history of Australia has often been surrounded with much stigma that has stemmed from the disdained treatment that the Aboriginal people received from the first English “settlers” in 1788.…
