My paternal relatives gather every year close to Christmas for a party. We spend the entire day talking, eating, and drinking. In the evening we have our gift exchange. The children, infants to age eight-teen, exchange amongst themselves. After the age of eighteen, you are allowed to participate in the adult gift exchange game. The adult gift exchange game requires that adults bring a gag gift. We have the gag gift pot; you either open a gift from the pot or take one that has already been opened. We share our joys, sorrows, and everything in between. This is something that I desperately want to bring to my classroom. If there is one thing that I have learned from my art teachers, it is that are had a way of allowing you to explore the inner workings of your heart and mind. I want to create an environment where students are comfortable with one another and with me. It will be a kind of safe haven if you will. The art classroom is where you can bare your soul on paper, in clay, layers and layers of paint. It is a place where they can discuss their work with the peers. They can ask for advice on their compositions. You see, while art can be a very solitary field, it can also be very communal and collaborative as well. If nothing else, discussing their work encourages them to truly think about what they are creating and
