Field Observation In The Classroom

Improved Essays
Field observations have always been a time for me to notice how things are done in the classroom, interact with the students, and unfortunutally, determine what I do not like in terms of methodology. However, all of that has changed this semester. My host teacher, has been an amazing example and understands that you learn by doing, and that is what is done in her classroom. Beginning on the first day, I was given the opportunity to teach the students and from then forward, I have taught at least one class a day. Though, throughout the times that I have not been in the lead position, I have noticed very strong teacher-student interactions. However, these teacher- student interactions are not always the same. For the first half of the day, I am at Meister Elementary. My host teacher, is very bubbly with the students, talks to them about their home-life, and makes jokes with them. When I switch schools, to Evans Elementary, the …show more content…
The math lab is all about students understanding learning. There are not tests or homework, students are given opportunities to play games, learn through hands-on activities, and apply their knowledge to real world situations. Students do not just “know” the information, they know it and are able to use it. For example, the students have used grid paper to construct “dream homes,” while doing this, they discussed how important it is to know the perimeter and area of spaces if they were to remodel or want to add additional furniture to the room. Something, they will need to do sometime in their life. The students know why it is beneficial and how they can use it in the future. In most math classes the most common phrase from students is: “when am I ever going to use this?” Never once have I heard this in the Math lab, when the students enter the classroom they are excited to begin their activities and learn more from the activities presented by the

These questions come at a very interesting time for be in my UT development – I both met my host teacher today, and I have been working in Gilmor elementary (where I have been placed) during the summer placement. The conversation with my host teacher was pretty neutral. The setting of the meeting was not altogether the greatest. I was in the unair-conditioned cafeteria eating lunch with my students when I was introduced (AMBUSHED) by the site coordinator to my host teacher for the year. The conversation was actually pretty short, and included a pretty neutral interaction – it was neither overly positive or overly negative.…

Doing clinical observations are very important because it gives a change to see student and teacher interactions first hand and get to see how well a student is responding. During my observations at Biddeford Intermediate School, I got the change to shadow an Ed. Teach in a life skills room. This was a great opportunity for me because it was a chance to see another kind of intervention done in the special education department. I have done many observations with an occupational therapist, and they have always been in lighting and very educational, but to visit a life skills room gave me more perspective on the special education department as a whole.…

This is when the teachers puts all of the student’s hard work together and show how they relate to each other. I think it is a good opportunity to let students judge their peers way of thinking and ask questions to get a better understanding. In the book, 5 practices orchestrating productive mathematics discussion, it tells us that we can use this time to get students to compare their peers’ explanations (Smith & Stein, 2011). The sixth practice or zero practice is setting goals and selecting tasks.…

If I were able to pick the line for Spring 2016 I would pick Potential Candidates that would help keep this chapter alive and better the chapter as well. I would chose Courtney Lall because she's very passionate and has made connections with other sister from other chapters. I would then choose Melanie Taveras. She hasn't been and interest long, but she knows a lot about the chapter and comes up with good suggestions when it comes to fundraising. about the.…

By incorporating and activating their background knowledge, math became a concept that they could understand through real life experiences. For example, I inquired about the number of wheels on a car. The students understood that each car had four wheels. I gradually went up to multiple cars in order to find how many wheels six car would have. The students were able to understand the concept of repeated addition (multiplication) through a discussion of an object that they were familiar with easier than reading a constructed word problem and…

Extended school year was an option I had heard discussed during IEP meetings in my fifteen years of experience, but today I was able to observe one of these classrooms in action first hand. The lesson I observed took place at a small group table with the teacher leading the lesson, a paraprofessional providing one on one support to one student, and a nurse supporting another student who is using a Tobii for communication. The teacher began the lesson by introducing a set of five sight words. The teacher then read the words aloud, gave a simple meaning, provided a sentence with the word, and the students traced the words with their fingers.…

Eating a meal and attending a class are equally important. One cannot be successful with just doing only one of these two actions. Eating give you energy for class, while attending class will give you knowledge to support yourself in the future. Thus, I decide to pick the Social Science and Humanities Building, or commonly known as SOCSCI by students, and the Tercero Dining Commons, or DC, to compare. It is true that SOCSCI and the Tercero DC are convenient locations, but there is more to these two places when I force myself to sit down and notice the details within both areas.…

I had the pleasure of observing Wendy Brown. Ms. Brown teaches first through fifth grade special need students. She teaches math and language arts by being a co-teacher, and she also teaches in the resource room. Her students never called her Ms. Brown, but they called her Ms. Wendy. Therefore I believe that to teach students the curriculum effectively while also sharing the love of math is to provide appropriate notes and examples but as well as including task that involve student exploration, technology, and engaging information. I also think that peers learn a lot from each other, so I will also let students be in charge of teaching topics so that their peers can explain it better then I possibly could. But in order to tech students to connect math to the real world I will incorporate task and activities they do relate to the real life. I can remember specifically projects that involved managing finances and using math specifically in a real world context. Therefore I believe that doing this within the classroom regularly will teach students the importance of learning these topics and what to do with that knowledge in the real world.…
