My Special Angel By Berniece Piercy

Sometime in your hurried lives, just come my way,
And talk to me.
The days that pass, are much the same, I hardly hear from
Anyone, what a lonely life, this seems to be.

I am forever talking to the wind, or praying to my God above,
I keep wishing you all, much happiness, and new hope for
You’re tomorrow, with my unending love.

There are times I feel an inward pain, for I can’t change,
This world at all.
Then I pray that God is beside me, and that He
Will always be there.
I am tired now, life’s heavy load does bend me low,
But I know that God can lift me up, and take me anywhere.

I will always need His strength and love, His faith and hope,
And peaceful hours each coming day,
The sunshine bright, the robins song, the I can make it,
And survive and go on my way.

This lady, who was my nurse, truly had to be, one of God’s angels sent from heaven up above.
And as she reached out her hand to me, her eyes were filled with truest love.

She quietly told me not to worry, that everything would be all right.
She gave me so much strength that I needed, to make it thru the longest night.

For those were all the lonely hours, that I must face, that never seemed to end.
Yes, in my fretful, painful moments, this angel was so needed, my truest friend.

She brightened up my day for me, surrounding me with sunshine’s golden light.

'Superman and Me' by Sherman Alexie is an inspiring bibliography about Sherman living on an Indian reservation in Washington state. He taught himself how to read using a Superman comic as a young boy. I admired that he chose a different life of educational success as apposed to most of the Indian children who did not want to learn at school. When he became a writer and went back to the Indian reservations to teach how to read and write. In my second reading, I noticed if it weren't for his father getting a proper education when he was a young boy, he might not have had the drive to learn the way he did in his early…

This blog is part of a series titled “You are Not Alone,” which gives individuals who have mental illness the opportunity to share their stories and impact the lives of others, whether that impact be to professionals (i.e. doctors, researchers, therapists), those who can relate to the situations (i.e. others with mental illness or those who know others with mental illness), and those who are unaware of the authentic impression of mental illness. Over the course of her essay “Depression Is,” Vasquez focuses on the fact that mental illness is real,…
