My Spanish School Experience Essay

Improved Essays
I was only six years old when I walked myself to school. The path I trekked started at my breakfast table and ended two whole rooms away in my family’s school room. Home education rocked. However, my education did not remain at home. My family and I toured historical sites, and twenty-seven State Capitol buildings on road trips as parts of my History class. But to me, the most memorable school experience was my 6th grade Spanish class. It was 4:00 A.M. when I excitedly woke up for Spanish class. I would be getting on three different planes with my family before I would arrive the next day at the Central American Spanish School in Utila, a Caribbean Island eighteen miles off the shores of Honduras. My mom chose the Spanish school …show more content…
I was determined to speak the language as soon as possible. My family and I connected ourselves to an Iglasia de Babtista, a Spanish speaking church on the Island to receive godly accountability and Spanish practice. The first week we were there, the pastor, in the middle of his Spanish sermon, said in English, “Do you understand what I am saying?” We perked up since we finally understood him, but we answered, “No.” The church laughed. Thankfully, the church gathered five times a week, so our understanding of his messages grew quickly. Some days we had to miss because of our heavy load of homework. To our surprise people in our church body came to our door and asked, if we were falling away from the Lord and putting our school above Him. We tried to explain that in the United States we are not used to gathering five to six times a week, so they would stay and help us finish our Spanish homework so that we could gather in our Lord next meeting. I started switching English words out for the Spanish words I was learning and soon my sentences were mostly in Spanish. I understood full messages from the Pastor. I even began to dream in Spanish. Speaking in Spanish helped me communicate with others on the island, specifically the girls. They did not know about purity, and that God’s design for relationship and physical interaction

Discourage, I tried to look for keywords that they said and looked for them in a spanish dictionary. I was eager to be apart of the community and learn about families everyday experience.…

Being a student at one of the most prestigious schools in the United States, you are given amazing classes which teach us various topics which eventually bring us back to our major or main topic of our undergraduate. Being a Mexican student, my knowledge is primarily about the struggles and stories from my own country. Coming to this school and meeting other minorities from other countries and taking classes that teach us about those countries as well, my knowledge about other problems and stories that happen to other students, families, and youth throughout the countries makes us realize that we are all the same and not alone when it comes to tragedies and inequalities like the ones many of us encounter in the US already. Attending "El Pais Que Viene” a Non-Profit Event & Book Launch, allowed me to connect the various topic and stories I learned in my Chicano studies class called “Central Americans” where we discussed the important events and inequalities that are happening throughout these central American countries and looking at stories through literature and media. Living in the Untied States as a minority, we tend to not tell our stories from our countries or even identify ourselves from those countries due to the negative image that the US has towards the people who come from these different countries.…

Being Hispanic in the United States, to me, represents forming part of a new generation. A new generation that wants to make a change and leave behind the corruption, the ignorance and the fights found in my own country. Personally, based on my experiences, it's hard being Hispanic. Prejudice and assumptions have become part of me because society impulsed an image that is not necessarily who I am. I am Hispanic, more specifically Mexican.…

Writing Sample Without a doubt in my mind the best class I have taken in the past two years of my academia was my high school Spanish class. I developed a very good relationship with my instructor Sr. K, that was probably the biggest reason it was my favorite class; However, the way his class was stuctured and how he taught contributed it to being my favorite class in the last two years. We would always start the day with a class plan so everyone would know what was going to take place in class and the next. Sr. k was very detailed in lessons…

It was at this time that Spanish changed for me because I was going to learn how to read, write and speak this language more fluently. It’s the first day of school and I’m already in my second class of the day which was Spanish level 1 and 2 for beginners. The class room is over its capacity because there are roughly about 10 students without seats so they have to sit on the floor. The first week of school was pretty simple in this class mostly just introduction and having to write a few made up stories.…

One day, volunteering at my local hospital, a registered nurse had inquired if any of the individuals collected at the nurses' station could speak Spanish. They gave each other quizzical looks before looking at me. I felt obligated; after all I did check the little box for 'Spanish' on my volunteer application. Aware that my Spanish was flawed, I nevertheless asked the nurse how I could be of help. My mind ran with apprehension as I followed her to a patient’s room; I seldom spoke Spanish to people outside of my family.…

Being identified as bilingual is a trait that people would not be astonished by, considering the fact that at least 20 percent of the American population speaks more than one language. Even with this being the case, I am proud of being bilingual. Since learning my own native language was a struggle for me, it was rewarding to have learned a completely foreign one. It was not till I turned six when I finally learned how to pronounce my C’s and R’s in Spanish. This took a long year of speech therapy, which was enjoyable, albeit strange.…
