My Sophomores Honors English Class

Decent Essays
Throughout this school year I have shown mastery and improvement on many skills. These skills have ranged from being able to identify, fix, and avoid common grammar errors, to being able to synthesize information into one focused argument. After going through the school year and showing my expertise on these topics through many assignments, I believe that I should receive credit for Sophomores Honors English.
The first learning target that I think I have shown a great deal of improvement on was being able to identify, fix and avoid common grammar errors. Through countless, frustrating and lengthy grammar problems on noredink, I think that I have improved on my grammar skills this semester. If it was not clear that I showed my mastery of grammar concepts on the noredink assignments, the last grammar test we took was pretty solid evidence that I indeed did grow as

Another learning target that I believe I have successfully completed this year was being able to synthesize information into one focused argument. When I read this learning target, I immediately felt this one applied to the persuasive speeches we have done this year. We started off with our little pet peeve speech which I felt I completed pretty well. In order to be semi-prepared for this speech I had to do a little research on my topic. Along with researched information, I had to take my personal opinions and thoughts and mesh these ideas into one, cohesive mini speech. And after a little bit of planning, I was able to put together what I believe was a decent speech. The next speech we had to complete was our 100 point persuasive speech on whatever topic we desired to argue about. This speech took a lot more work to compose

The peer I had to analyze for persuasive speech was Ronald Coates. I thought his gave a great speech that really spoke to the majority in the audience. His main idea of his argument was that massed shooting are becoming more prevalent across the United State and we should take some actions to control the events that is happening right now. The topic he chose was interesting attention gathering with providing strong detailed in his preparation. There were couple of areas where the speech could have improved, such as he would have given the listener more details about the solutions and missing out a lot of other things.…

In between all the sessions and activities there never seemed to be a time to sit down and formulate a well thought out speech. In running for a city government, for example, we were so busy discussing out city’s issues that as soon as the discussion was over it was time for the candidates to give their speeches. Even though the amount of time was very limited, it was a very enriching experience because the method of thinking…

Based on my prior experience in honors english for two years, AP English Language and Composition, and AP Literature, English 101 honors is the best fit for my experience and my level of meticulous and strategic writing at this point. Writing and reading have always come easy to me in school; whether reading to write a book review for the class or reading for the AP exam, I have excelled with high honors and the highest remarks from the faculty on my writing and style. English has always been one of my best subjects. Most of my english teachers were pretty impressed with my writing skills and with my advanced vocabulary for my age. My 9th grade english teacher even thought that I should get into writing, whether as a blogger or as an journalist.…

After reviewing my persuasive speech over why the University of Oklahoma is the best university in the nation, I would sum up my speech as a little bit of train wreck. Although I made good claims with factual evidence, the amount of stuttering I did, and all the times I was choked up throughout the speech drew my audience’s attention away. From this, I lost my audience’s belief that I was competent of the information I was reiterating to them. At the introduction of my speech I believe I started out fairly strong and gave a good run down of the coming speech.…

Mistakes cannot always be seen as a negative, as you can move on and correct them to better your knowledge. From my first essay this semester to my last I have seen a vigorous amount of improvement. Not only seen in my grades, but in the way my writing has transitioned between paragraphs and topics. This has helped my work flow more and added a keen sense of intelligence. I have seen much improvement in my essays but have seen the most significant change from my first entrance essay “My season”, to my major events essay “Wayward Feelings”, to my final argumentative essay “A Helpful Hand”.…

Final Persuasive Speech Reflection Believe me when I say that my progress from then to now has come a long way. Initially after giving the persuasive speech, I felt that there has been little process in all of this time that I had spent trying to learn to communicate more effectively. Worst of all perhaps, I felt powerless to do anything to change this. This was my most practiced speech and it did not feel that way. Even the thought of having to go back and essentially relive those 7 minutes was not something I was particularly excited about.…

This English class has been very helpful in my efforts to improve my writing abilities, but has also been very challenging due to there being a different median for every essay. It’s been a heavy work load especially this semester since I decided to enroll in five classes, but in the end it has been very beneficial indeed. I can’t say that writing essays has been one of my strong points but I believe that this course has helped me improve tremendously and it has also made me feel a lot more comfortable with my writing. While in high school I would usually write all of my essays a day before the due date a habit of mine that was very difficult to overcome, but now I have learned from my mistakes.…

Guest Speaker Critique The first presentation I watch of Benny Agosto. He is an attorney personal injury trial at law, and very well republished who talked about topic persuasion-the power to persuade toward audiences. The presentation was very well organized and interesting. For instance, some of the keys that he discussed was the definition of argue which is “to make a case for a judgment or opinion” and we seem to argue a lot in our daily life that we don’t even know it.…
