Decent Essays
Today, I lost it on my son’s soccer coach. I don’t normally pop off, but If I do it’s because you went too far. Popping off is not fun to me. In fact, it embarrasses me to step out of my character, and lose it in front of people. Anyways, the coach made my son feel bad because of how he spoke to him. The purpose of the study is to explore the role that gender plays within the coach-athlete relationship, with the intention to provide valuable knowledge towards the creation of a successful coach-athlete relationship. The quality of the coach-athlete relationship is highly important as it can contribute to an athlete’s motivation, self-esteem and success within the sport (Jowett & Meek, 2000). It has been suggested that the coach-athlete relationship is one of the primary influences on an athlete (Jowett & Poczwardowski, 2007) and can therefore have a significant effect on an athlete’s quality of life (Greenleaf, Gould & Dieffenbach, 2001). With athletes and coaches working closely and spending lots of time together it has been suggested…

I angrily paced around my bedroom as even thinking about the coach made my pulse raise and blood boil. I always tell myself I should say something, tell the coach how I really feel. But every time one of my fellow team members tries to say something to the coach he shuts them down and walks away. He never listens, not even to the parents. Every single time someone’s mom or dad mentions or suggests something to the coach he always blames the player and punishes him.…

The scope of power and prestige was present in my summer coaching job because both Tommy and I were equal status individuals working together to complete the task which was ultimently to have the team win more games. Although I do play in a higher division of college baseball which lead me to believe that there was a high expectation of me from others involved in the organization, players on the team and parents, I do believe that tommy and I were of equal status when it came to coaching. I felt the needed to step in and perform at a higher level of coaching because of my expericene within the organization, having a better knowledge of the players on the team and as feeling the needed to really help the team when the head coach was not available…

Coaches have the power to change lives. I can humbly say this as all my coaches, both good and bad, have taught me in some way what it takes to be a good athlete and most importantly how to be a good human being. They have taught me life lessons that I can only hope to preserve by instilling them into my athletes in my time as a coach. The articles I have chosen to highlight in this essay show how coaches have helped to develop character in athletes, how they pushed them to be the best on and off the field of play, and illustrate how they stepped into the lives of athletes and became so much more than just a coach.…

My son Andrew started playing soccer for his school this year. This is his first time playing a sport with a team against other schools. I am so proud of his dedication to his team, but am scared for his self-esteem. Andrew is more on the “thin” side, and feels he isn’t big enough to play and is often scared of the ball hitting him, or other kids kicking his shins. He was injured in his fourth game and sat out for 10 minutes or so.…

“Victory is remembered for at most two decades: an act of good sportsmanship is remembered for a lifetime.” Simon Nguyen. By definition sportsmanship is defined as: fair play, respect for opponents, and polite behavior by someone who is competing in a sport or other competition (Merriam-Webster 2015). Though it isn’t a hard word to define, I like better the definition from Kidshealth.org, Sportsmanship is a style and an attitude, and it can have a positive influence on everyone around you (Downshen 2014). I recently went to an elementary football game of my cousins.…
